Default Saskin: Cap will increase next season

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=187151&hubname=nhl

PALM BEACH, Fla. (CP) - The team-by-team salary cap in the NHL is expected to rise to between US$46 million and $47.5 million next season.

Despite lower attendance in some markets, the league's total revenues are on the rise. This salary cap is currently $44 million.

"There's not going to be a dip," Ted Saskin, executive director of the NHL Players' Association, said after addressing NHL owners. "The cap's definitely going to increase based on everything I've seen so far."

Saskin would not say exactly how much, but the early word out of the Board of Govenors' meeting Monday was that revenues were expected to grow about five per cent this season, at least according to early projections, which translates into a $47.5-million salary cap.

=================================

I'm glad the league revenues are continuing to go up, but I still think the NHL needs to market their product a little better.... after all, its the coolest game on Earth!

I think this isn't a good thing (the cap increasing). I think this is appeasement to the players who still haven't bought into the Salary cap or the teams that haven't found financial sanity under it.

The league is not operating on all cylinders and their marketing sucks. Attendance is down -- which is the lifeblood for income -- and the cap is going up? Defies logic.

I agree with everything you've said. I think its stupid to raise the cap even more. Just because Philadelphia can't buy their way out of their problems is not reason enough to raise the cap and allow salaries to climb even higher. The cap was supposed to keep teams from killing the league with their own overspending. This is simple enablement. It needs to stop.

With attendance CLEARLY way down...despite their rhetoric about ticket price increases offsetting that. What a crappy way to treat your fans. To jack up prices while you raise prices. Spend that money to MARKET THE GAME / LEAGUE. Expose your product to more customers...not sour the product so it returns to crap once again. This is a truly baffling move. GO WILD!!!
