Default The Rory Fitzpatrick movement

The first thing you say when you read that title is "WTF?" or some other "Huh?" remark. Rory Fitzpatrick? Who? What movement?

In a move that mimics Netroots activism in politics, NHL fans on Hockey's Future's message board (with combined effort from several other message board sources around the internet and social networking sites such as Facebook) are attempting to tell off the NHL's All-Star voting system by launching a huge write-in campaign for Vancouver Canucks player Rory Fitzpatrick.

And yes, this movement has it's own website as well (sadly pathetic but it serves it's purpose).

I've always thought it would be cool to have posters to try and influence online voting for something big. Seeing Rory Fitzpatrick as a starter would be worth it.

Write-In Candidate Rory Fitzpatrick Now in Fifth Place on All-Star Ballot
by David M Catherine

The write-in campaign to get Vancouver defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick voted to the NHL All-Star Game is picking up steam.

In the latest released voting tallies, Fitzpatrick has moved up to fifth place in the standings, up from twelfth place a week ago. He was the leading vote-getter this past week, receiving over 113,000 votes. While he is still well behind the leaders Scott Niedermayer and Nicklas Lidstrom, he made up more than 20,000 votes in the past week.

Fitzpatrick's supporters have until 11:59 PM (EST) on January 2, 2007 to make up the remaining ground.
I heard canucks players showed up to practice one day sporting Rory T-shirts.

I don't support this at all. While I think its ok to make a statement about the validity of internet voting; I still think its bit lame to put this guy in there. If you really want to send a message; instead of a bad defenseman. Put in a goon. In a day where people say goons are going to disappear from the game...what better to have a goon in the ALL Star game? Just a thought...

I heard on Home Ice (XM channel 204) this morning that Rory was embarrassed after hearing of this "movement". He was asked if he would actually attend if voted in and he said probably not.

So, if he doesn't have any desire to attend, why even bother wasting your time voting for him? Just my 2 cents...

Because the movement is larger than Rory Fitzpatrick. It's not about him as-so-much sticking it to the system.

Rory is 2nd in the west in All Star voting

I heard San Jose set up computers in their arena for fans to use for voting. It's stuff like that and the Rory movement that will change the way the All-Star rosters are picked next year.

From what I've heard, some Sharks fans had scripts running to automatically place votes. The NHL made a change to the voting procedure about ten days ago to prevent rapid fire votes.

Fitzpatrick says he isnt sure if he would go if voted, but he also said that all of his teammates and other players think he should go. He even admitted that it was great that the NHL is getting press where it usually doesnt as a result of this.

The Sharks have done that before - about 4 or 5 years ago. Cheating *******s.

Yeah, those ads had me in stitches - absolutely hilarious. The Good thing is that the NHL has not suffocated this fan creativity by saying they'll stop this voting circus (which MLB or the NFL would surely do). What sucks is that this content is the funniest and most original marketing of the NHL or an NHL player in YEARS. Rory's embarrassed by things but he's suddenly an icon without doing a thing.

TSN.ca and the Vancouver Sun are reporting that Rory wasn't voted into the All Star game...
