Any dreams of a reconciliation between NHL commissoner Gary Bettman and Detroit Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios were tossed away this week, after news leaked over the weekend that former NHLPA Executive Director Ted Saskin got help from the league in his fight against Chelios and other members of the group that eventually toppled him.
"I can't believe my good friend Gary would want to leave me in Russia," Chelios sarcastically told the Detroit Free Press. "I'd like to have a private talk with Gary one of these days, see what he means." The Toronto Star published a story on Saturday regarding leaked e-mails between the league and Saskin, outlining a warm relationship between the two normally opposing sides. Chelios, who headed the group of players who eventually had Saskin removed from the union, was referring to a Saskin email in the article that jokingly suggested he may send Chelios to Russia for a meeting in 2006. According to the Star, Bettman e-mailed back, "with a one-way ticket?" "I feel the same way about him (Bettman) and Daly and Saskin as I did from Day 1 - everyone knows how I feel about them," Chelios told the Free Press. "They didn't play by the rules. If they get caught for something - we'll see." The 23-year NHL veteran also had his share of harsh words for player agent Don Meehan, accusing him of helping Saskin, Daly and Bettman undermine the NHLPA. "Now, with the e-mails we've looked at, and this is my opinion, he took a role with Daly and Bettman and Saskin," Chelios told the Free Press. "The players' union was the least thing in his mind." ![]()

A lot of people, not just Bettman, wish he would go to Russia on a one-way ticket.
Chelios himself has done as much to undermine the NHLPA as anyone else, and will continue to do so for the forseable future. |
