Default Downie gets 20 gms for hit on McAmmond

Quote:
The National Hockey League has handed down its verdict on the Flyers' Steve Downie.

Colin Campbell, the NHL's Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations, has suspended Downie for 20 games for his hit on Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond in Thursday's exhibition game. Based on his average annual salary, Downie will forfeit $63,101 during his suspension.

''Over the last several months, the League has met with players, coaches, general managers and owners on the subject of hits to the head,'' said Campbell. ''While all of the stakeholders in our League agree that hitting is an important part of the essence of the NHL game, all were also unanimous in the belief that where a player deliberately targets an opponent's head, the conduct should be subject to review and the possible assessment of supplemental discipline.''

Well Campbell has had a busy pre-season, and I wonder what that means for the season. Either everyone will have it out of their systems or we'll conitnues to see this kind of bush league play.

I still think he should've gotten an equal suspension to Simon's, but I'm just glad they at least gave him 20. I hope that means that the suspension follows him to the AHL or Juniors, where ever he will be playing. Cuz I think it's a no brainer that he won't be with the big boys. Just MY opinion, but then I'm often wrong too. So time will tell.

I think that this is just "hey, this won't stand" suspensions and Campbell will be lax come the start and middle of the regular season.

Downie got everything he deserved -- if not a little less. I just wish Campbell would do something against intentional intent-to-injure hits like this more often. By December, guys start getting away with these and by February/March, they are injuring people and THEN drawing suspensions. That's not how it should work.

It'd be a great suspension if it actually stood for something. Sadly, it probably won't, because as you said, he'll more than likely be back down in the AHL where he'll have the chance to do it again.

Still, at least something came out of it.

Good long suspension.

I think the NHL should make a rule where if youre suspended inthe NHL you should be suspended in the AHL. It s not fair because the player who is suspended should be punished and by sending him to play in the AHL he still gets play time.

The NHL doesn't have the authority to impose sentences in another league. It'd be great if the AHL would step up and carry suspensions down from the NHL, but that's something that only they can decide.

I'd love to see him sit and spin for 20 games at all levels...

EDIT -- Strike that, the AHL is reviewing it to either enforce, alter or dismiss the suspension. Link: ESPN - Downie and out: Suspended winger sent to AHL - NHL

The fact that they are even reveiwing it is a great sign. Maybe a little more cooperation between the leagues with this type of stuff, and maybe some of this stuff will stop, and I stress SOME

So that 20 games will be put to use when ever the Flyers call him up to the NHL at any time. Either way he has to miss 20 games in the NHL when they call him up so why dont they just leave him up and just get those 20 games dealt with.

The AHL also imposed a one month sentence, making Downie ineligible for AHL action until November 3rd, and that does not affect the NHL sentence, which he will have to serve BEFORE stepping foot on NHL ice again.

Great News.
