Default Eagles/Bills Blockbuster trade

Eagles Deal Walker to Bills for Spikes

The Eagles have gotten themselves a linebacker.

Not just any linebacker – a proven linebacker that’s been to the Pro Bowl.

Monday night the Eagles acquired nine-year veteran Takeo Spikes and backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Buffalo Bills for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional 2008 draft pick.

“Takeo Spikes is a proven playmaker in the National Football League,” general manager Tom Heckert said in a statement released by the team. “He has the ability to play all three linebacking positions and we’re happy to add him to our defense. Likewise, Kelly Holcomb is also a proven veteran who will add depth behind Donovan McNabb and A.J. Feeley.”

But here’s the catch.

Spikes is 30, and because of injuries he’s played only 15 games in the last two seasons combined. Plus, he has two years left on the six-year deal he signed with Buffalo in 2003 and is scheduled to earn a combined $9.5 million ($4.5 million next season).

That said, the Eagles’ need for a linebacker was no secret. Jeremiah Trotter’s best days are behind him. Rookie Omar Gaither finished the season as the starting weakside linebacker after replacing the ineffective Matt McCoy. Veteran Dhani Jones started on the strong side last year by default. The Eagles had hoped rookie Chris Gocong would ultimately replace Jones, but the third-round pick suffered a neck injury in training camp and spent the season on injured reserve

Wow, huge trade for both teams. As an Eagles fan this is absolutely awesome.

Wow. Great trade for the Eagles. The Eagles are set for a Superbowl run for sure. I smell Eagles Patriots rematch this year...

As Eagles fans, we expect them to make a big splash right off the start, and they don't, but the Eagles always seem to please us. Kevin Curtis, Montae Reagor, and now Takeo Spikes!
