My Bolts played hard, but too many mistakes and too many stupid decisions
by Coach 'ShortonHumor' .I'm not sure how many coaches would have Gone for it on 4th and 11 in a 0-0 game instead of kicking a 47 yard field goal, but I would assume the number is very small. i am confident that if the coaches were reversed, we would have won the game handily. Time for a change in San Diego. Bill Cowher, are you listening? |

Cal, I don't see Cowher coaching in 2007 and maybe not even in 2008. I think he is a man of his word and he truly wants some time off.
As for Schottenheimer...he has been successful everywhere he has been and made every one of his teams respectable. 200-126 career regular season record! Just two losing seasons in 21 years as a Head Coach, seven 11+ win seasons, and eleven 10+ win seasons. Agreed he struggles in the playoffs (5-13 overall) but he will get you there on a very regular basis. People said the same stuff about Cowher and the post-season until he finally broke through last season...if he keeps trying he will finally make it there! I guess you have forgotten about the six straight losing seasons prior to Schott's arrival. 31-65 under Bobby Ross, Kevin Gilbride, June Jones, and Mike Riley. As a Browns fan, I think you are nuts to want him out and I would take him back in Cleveland in a heartbeat! I would take his respectability over what 20-25 coaches in the NFL bring on a year to year basis! Last edited by Doggy; January 15th, 2007 at 02:23 PM. |

I think you got to give Schottenheimer more time. Marty went 47-33 in five seasons. And of all things to fire him after a 14-2 season! His job security wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for the Chargers outspoken GM A.J. Smith's comments. The problem is AJ doesn’t give any of the credit to Marty for coaching up the team and thinks the real reason the team is successful is because of the players he brought in and the moves he made as GM. He has made good moves since coming there but it takes a good coach to do anything with them though.
Chargers can bring in whoever they want like Cam Cameron and see if they do any better. |

But the overwhelming opinion remains.... that Marty is a poor game-day coach, and does not have a good track record in big games....
I tend to be one of the ones that thinks that this team's success this season was more due to the personnel, and not the coaching....

NFL.com - NFL TV Schedules
NFL Schedule of opponents linked above; You can have Marty; the objective of teams is to go to the Super Bowl. I'd prefer a coach that can get us to 10-6 and a chance to win playoff games. I'll take my chances with cam cameron or Wade phillips. I have thought about it and the mistakes are a reflection of the coach. i wrote chargers management with my thoughts too. Field Goal decisions were unacceptable. Needed to try the 47 yarder early and needed an extra 5 yards late with a quick out. Botched timeouts are another factor. Coaches are needed for Big decisions in pressure situations and Marty simply cannot be counted on for those decisions. |

Fire Marty, its not to late!!
He has LT, and like the most talented team. One and done in the playoffs? You have to win the big game, if you go 14-2. What a shame hes staying

they should fire shott and send a large compensation package to the chiefs for herman edwards, oh yeah there's a coach for you if the chiefs had gone 14-2 how many people would say its because of that beast they have at running back? put a coach like edwards on the chargers and i don't think they go 14-2.

The idea of firing Marty reminds me of 2001 after the Bucs were bounced from the Playoffs again by the Eagles. Tony Dungy got fired because of the exact same reasons that is being brought up now.
Yeah, the Bucs got Gruden... And Gruden coached the Bucs to the Super Bowl... And then he did exactly what? He took the team and gutted it with thanks to his ego. He has held no coach on offense accountable for offensive failings (while heads rolled on defense as Monte Kiffin was not happy with the Bucs D's poor showing this year). My point is this: Would you rather simply get a quick fix in coaching, win it all and then see the chargers get dismantled with thanks to horrendous decisions to appease that new coach? Or is staying competitive and having chances EVERY year worth having -- even if it doesn't lead to a ring? I'd rather have a perpetually competitive franchise than a one-and-done team that can be looked at as a joke. |
