REPORT: SEVEN YEARS, $70 MILLION FOR HALL
Posted by Mike Florio on March 18, 2008, 8:28 p.m.

As the Oakland Raiders and the Atlanta Falcons continue to work toward a deal that will send cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Bay Area, ESPN.com’s Chris Mortensen reports that Hall’s contract will be worth $70 million over seven years.

Other details aren’t yet known — such as, for example, whether the final year is fueled by funny money aimed at driving the perceived average up to $10 million per year.

The contract signed in 2007 by cornerback Nate Clements widely was (and still is) reported as being worth $80 million over eight years. But as our pal Howard Balzer learned at the time, the final season has a $16 million salary . . . and it disappears completely before the final season even begins.

So Clements’ deal actually is for seven years, $64 million. If Hall’s deal is truly worth seven years and $70 million, he’ll be the first defensive back legitimately getting $10 million annually.

How and where is the money coming from? Aren't they a cap to deal with? The Panthers is in cap jeopardy every year, and they don't have anybody making that kind of jack.
Didn't the Raiders just signed another guy to an insane contract?

My guess is that since most of the team sucks, they're not paying most of them very much money.

A quarter billion in potential contract dollars hasn’t bought the Oakland Raiders respect.

Despite an astronomical potential payout of more than $250 million in offseason deals, the Raiders are still bogged down in the bottom third of the league rankings. This despite adding a quartet of key players via trade and free agency – DeAngelo Hall (at a potential $70 million), Javon Walker ($55 million), Gibril Wilson ($39 million) and Kwame Harris ($14 million) – and retaining their own talent in Tommy Kelly ($50.5 million), Justin Fargas ($12 million) and Nnamdi Asomugha ($9.8 million via exclusive franchise tag).

In reality, those seven players won’t collect anything near that quarter billion in possible earnings (a sum that rivals the Gross Domestic Product of Micronesia). The lack of guaranteed dollars at the back end of NFL contracts will translate into a number maybe half that size. But at the very least, the mythical money bought the Raiders headlines.

These deals were structured like Alexander's. He got paid only a few million dollars over the last three years. He is owed almost 30M$ over the next three.
