Angry London hosting a Super Bowl?

Quote:
MIAMI (Reuters) - The Super Bowl could be played in London one day, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

The Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants will play a regular season NFL match at London's Wembley Stadium for the first time on October 28 but the sport's biggest game has never been held outside the United States.

"We've sold 95,000 tickets for a regular season game over there and there is a lot of interest in having a Super Bowl in London," Goodell said in comments broadcast by Arizona's 12 News television.

This just gets me mad. I mean come on talk about turning your back on the home fans in the USA, the fans who made football America's game. It just wouldn't be the same for the Super Bowl to be played outside the US. This is all about money making, and it just makes me sick

Super Bowl to be played outside US?

Actually it is all about keeping the sport alive as it competes with the NBA and MLB for international dollars. Recent projections have MLB passing the NFL in total revenue within the next few years. The reason they are doing so is because they are gaining huge traction in international markets.

The NFL has to explore ways to expand interest in it outside of Anglo North America. Yes, some of that is about money, but its is also about finding talent. The NFL needs to find Dirk Nowitskis and Ichiros, it needs an Albert Pujols and Alexander Ovechkins. Every other league in the US gets exceptional talent from outside the US of A and they are all much stronger because of it.

Jose (and I will answer your PM later ), haven't they already been turning their backs on the home fans by playing games at 3rd party sites since the inception of the Super Bowl???

The NFL (as with the NHL, NBA and MLB) need to grow their league into world brands -- not just US/North American brands. Staging a championship in London adds Europe to the audience of game watchers... This may or may not be a worthwhile thing seeing the NFL abandoned the NFLE

But football is the only sport that isn't played at a high level outside the United States. Other than kickers, we aren't going to find much talent elsewhere.

But if they NEVER increase the exposure they won't ever find talent. It has to start. Baseball was barnstorming in the 20s and for that reason there is baseball in Venezuela and Japan. You can thank guys like Ruth for guys like Johann and Ichiro.

Speaking of Canada, it looks like the Buffalo Bills are working out how to get a home game or two in Toronto.

Has it tripled its revenue in the last 15 years?

Growth Spurt
How much has the NFL grown under Paul Tagliabue's leadership?

Television contracts

1990: Four-year, $3.6 billion contract (Inflation Value: $5.35 billion)
2006: Contracts with four networks and DirecTV spanning as much as eight years is now worth $23.91 billion

Gross League Revenues

1990: $1.1 billion (Inflation Value: $1.63 billion)
2006: $5.8 billion

Franchise Value

Team worth the most:
1991: Miami Dolphins, $205 million, Financial World Magazine estimate (Inflation Value: $289 million)
2005: Washington Redskins: $1.3 billion, Forbes estimate

Sponsorship

Price To Be An Official NFL Sponsor:
1990: $200,000 to $5 million
2006: Gatorade pays $45 million per year, Sprint pays $120 million a year

Super Bowl Commercial

Price of a 30-second ad
1990: $700,000
2006: $2.5 million

link

Looks like it has done better than that.

odd, recent news from baseball is that MLB revenue is growing faster than any other US sports league and that by 2015 (IIRC) will pass the NFL.

You asked me if the NFL had tripled their revenue in the last 15 years and I showed you they had.

It just struck me as odd regarding the MLB announcement concerning their revenue.

Check back in 2015 and see if their projections come true.

It doesn't matter where they play the Super Bowl, unless you're wealthy or you win a contest, you're going to be watching on TV. Satellite relays have improved greatly over the years. Reception should be just fine.

True, but I don't see the point in playing it in London.
