Mavs Get : Kidd, Malik Allen, A. Wright
Nets Gets : Harris, Stackhouse, Diop, Ager, George, Future 1s and cash Well everyone knew that the Gasol trade would push the Mavs to do something and everyone assumed it would be Kidd and today it finally gets done. Dont really LOVE the trade for Dallas, they are selling the future @ pg ( Harris ) to win now. They have this year and MAYBE next with Kidd on the top of his game and then he will likely break down. Nets, Love the deal for them, they get a very good young PG to lead their team and 3 good expiring contracts. Dirk, Dampier, Kidd, Terry, JHo vs Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Kobe, DFish vs Duncan, Manu, TP...........who you got ?

Rumor is the Nets are just going to release Jerry Stackhouse and he will re-sign with the Mavericks.
This is a bad deal for the Mavericks. Devin Harris is going to be a great young PG. Two years from now the Mavericks will regret this deal. Of course, Cuban has done a good job drafting.

I like this deal for both sides. Key players in the Dallas nucleus are on the wrong side of 30, and adding Jason Kidd to a team that already includes Jason Terry, makes Devin Harris expendable. If the Mavericks really want Harris for the future, they can still sign him in a couple years as a free agent (once they're done with Kidd.)
The other players involved can be easily replaced by Dallas which now becomes a more attractive destination for veterans looking to sign on the cheap with a championship contender. I think Dallas had to make a move in the wake of the Laker and Sun deals. That team was getting a tad too complacent. Here are my questions: does Jason Kidd still get to play for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star game? Does he still get credited with an All-Star appearance even if he doesn't get to play? |

Not so fast. Devean George exercised his contractual right to refuse the trade:
ESPN - Mavs forward George blocks trade of Kidd to Mavs - NBA Jason Kidd remains a New Jersey Net for at least another day. He might not actually mind too much if that means he gets to play in the All-Star game. I'm sure something will be worked out within the next few days where an angry Mark Cuban either replaces George with some other player in the deal, or bribes George into accepting the trade. |

Deal appears to be dead based on Stackhouse being an Idiot
In addition to Devean George stopping the Jason Kidd trade, comments made by Jerry Stackhouse could also prevent the deal from happening. The league will investigate whether NBA rules were violated with a prearranged agreement for Stack to return to Dallas after being bought out by the Nets and sitting out the 30-day waiting period, sources said. The league will consider forbidding Stackhouse to re-sign with the Mavericks as punishment for the comments he made on Wednesday, when he said that he was going to have a 30-day "rest" and then re-sign with Dallas. And word on the street is that the Mavs won't do the trade if they can't keep Stackhouse. Stay tuned

I don't see why it matters if a player re-signs with the team that traded him after 30 days. While some players like Payton and Stackhouse don't mind re-signing with the teams that "trade" them for CBA purposes, there's no guarantee that the other team (New Jersey, in this case) will release them. Furthermore, even if the other team does release them, there's no guarantee that players would be eager to sit out a month before re-signing with the same team. I know that if I were traded, I wouldn't necessarily re-up with my old team. I'd want to explore all possible free agent opportunities.
Stackhouse is an idiot for making his intentions so transparent, but I don't see how the league has any right to punish him for exercising his right to serve out the 30 days and then re-sign. What if the Suns, Lakers, Spurs, Celtics or Pistons called him up with an offer? Would he immediately reject all of them? I could definitely see a Western Conference team trying to disrupt things for Dallas by making Stackhouse a superior offer. |
