Default Shaq to the Suns : Done

Suns Get : Shaq

Heat Get : Marion and Banks

I think its a good trade for both team, Suns werent winning with Marion there anyway, I think that was pretty much agiven. Marions me 1st attitude grew tiresome real fast out there and the Suns are soft inside and adding Shaq IF healthy along side Amare should create problems for opposing big men. Now can shaq stay healthy and inshape to keep up with the Suns, that remains to be seen. But if he does I think its a good move for them

As for the Heat, they suck.....adding Marion adds a young superstar that IF he resigns gives them a great 1-2 in Wade and Marion for MANY years to come. IF Marions tests the market then that gives the Heat A TON of cap space. Whatever Marion choses its a win win for the Heat

I like this deal for the Heat, primarily for the reasons you stated. Shawn Marion either gives Miami a nice young 1-2 punch, or a ton of cap space in the off-season to go out and sign some other top player (Gilbert Arenas?) Shaq was looking increasingly washed up, and the last place where you want to see an aging 4-time NBA Champion is on a rebuilding team.

I'm not sure that I like this trade from Phoenix's perspective. While the Suns needed to move Marion for team chemistry reasons, I'm not convinced that they couldn't have traded him for someone better than O'Neal. Frankly, Shaq might not have anything left, which would mean the Suns just sacrificed salary cap flexibility for an injury-prone backup center of questionable value. Couldn't the Suns instead have pried Pau Gasol out of Memphis (pre-Laker trade) for Shawn Marion? Couldn't they have swapped him and Barbosa to Houston for Tracy McGrady? It seems like there could have been some better fits if the Suns tried a little harder. They're not going to get vintage O'Neal, and it's often dangerous to make trades for people on the basis of how they used to play.

Even a peak O'Neill wouldn't have fit in the Suns style of offense. This deal makes no sense for Phoenix. They felt pressure from the Gasol move and so kind of panicked.

I agree, the Suns panicked. This goes entirely against their organizational philosophy which is to save money (to the point of almost never signing any draft picks) and add players who fit D'Antoni's fast break scheme.

Now maybe Shaq will feel revitalized in a winning atmosphere and will elevate his play to the point where he's somewhat above average. But Shawn Marion was well above average. I remember threads on the old board about whether Shawn Marion was a top 20 player in the NBA. Would you trade a young top-20 player for a late 30s injury-prone Shaquille O'Neal? It's not as though the Suns needed him. They're doing just fine in the Western Conference and have Amare Stoudamire to clog up the middle.

The reason they traded Marion was because his ego was too big, just read any article about him in the local papers and its obvious he wore out his welcome out there.

Gasol in Phx ? yea, maybe but hes a soft bigman, what Phx misses most out of everything is Kurt Thomas, that enforcer down low. Granted Shaq is not what he used to be, he can still be pretty dominate. He wont be doubled team at all in Phx like he was in Miami. NOt saying he will be great out there but IF hes healthy hes going to put up great numbers. Maybe something like 17/9 and 2 blocks ?

Not sure what other big man was on the block that the Suns could have traded for and they had to move Marion or get nothing for him and have him playing out his contract and continuing to cause problems in the locker room. Addition by subtraction is how I look at it, plus Diaw gets a bigger role and can probably replace most of what Marion did minus the 3s.

Absolute terrible trade by the Suns. They gave up too much Shaq.

I even think that Marian alone is a better player than that of Shaq. It does not make sense at all. Shaq doesnt even fit in on this team which is all about shooting 3's.

Maybe the Suns will park him in the paint and use him to rebound missed threes and turn them into dunks. Stoudamire will be the athletic big with the fancy post moves and sky-hooks. Shaq will just be the widebody who boxes people out and gets his points off tip-ins and dunks. It might work out since Shaq isn't expected to be the go-to guy in the paint, as he was in Miami.

Shaq is about the 5th option in Phx behind Amare, Nash, Hill, Barbosa
