Default Gasol a Laker

Going to LA : Gasol and a 2nd rounder

Going to Memphis : Kwame, Jarvis Critt, Marc Gasol, Aaron Mckie, 08 and 2010 1st rounders

Well.....assuming Bynum comes back as his old self, I would put the Lakers are the favorite to come out of the West and they have an EXCELENT chance to take down the Celtics or Pistons.

Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Kobe, DFish........

No idea why the Grizz did this other than the 9mil in expiring contract that is Kwame Brown. With Critt he is another PG in an already crowded backcourt in Memphis with COnley, Lowry, JCN.

This is a steal for the Lakers and should vault them into a title contender

That's too bad that Gasol had to be included in a deal for Gasol. I bet they would have enjoyed playing together as teammates. Have two brothers played on the same team before?

Let's be honest, the Lakers are back.

They are the favorite to win the NBA title now.

Phil Jackson will pass Red Auerbach by winning his 10 title while Kobe will shut up all the critics who said he couldn't win a title without Shaq.

I think Gasol might be a tad overrated. I doubt he turns the Lakers into championship contenders. I'd still take the Suns, Spurs or Mavericks over the Lakers in a 7-game series. And if the Lakers do advance to the NBA Finals, I wouldn't count out the Celtics (Garnett, Pierce, Allen, 2-0 vs. Lakers, 16-0 vs. West), Pistons (well-rounded top to bottom) or Cavaliers (LeBron, LeBron and LeBron.)

The Cavs ?

The dont stand a chance vs any team in the West, they should last year that they could not hang in the finals and they have not made themselves any better. Yes Bron is Bron but thats not enough vs the West

As for Gasol being overrated, not sure where that comes from hes 1 of the best big men in the game

20/ 9 and a block this year

19 / 9 and 2 blocks for his career

Team him up with Bynum who was dominate and Odom who has really gone off since Gasol came over and lets not forget Kobe........I mean I just dont see how they arent a title contender. Id rank them #1 in the West right now, SA is showing signs of age, and if TP doesnt make it back you can pretty much count them out.

28 players currently have a higher rebounding average than Pau Gasol.

NBA.com:

36 players currently have a higher scoring average than Pau Gasol.

NBA - Statistics by Category - Yahoo! Sports

9 players currently have a higher rebounding average AND a higher scoring average. So if you're looking at a player by his combined scoring/rebounding numbers, then Gasol is 10th best in the league, which barely puts him in the top third. While that's still very good, I don't think it's championship-level good. Gasol makes a great complementary player but he doesn't lift a team to championship-caliber status. During his 5 full seasons with the Grizzlies, he never got them out of the first round of the playoffs.

CBS Sportsline ranks Gasol as the 32nd best player (statistically) in the NBA:

NBA Basketball Player Rankings - CBSSports.com

Then again, rankings don't always translate into team success. The only team with two players in the top 10 is Denver (Iverson at #4, Anthony at #7.) The only teams with players in the top 20 are Denver, Orlando (Howard at #3, Turkoglu at #20), Washington (Butler at #5, Jamison at #11) and Utah (Boozer at #13, Williams at #19.) The highest ranking Spur is Tim Duncan at #21, the highest ranking Celtic is Paul Pierce at #30 and the highest ranking Piston is Chauncey Billups at #49.

he's not being asked to carry the lakers. he's being asked to be a secondary star, ala ginobili/parker.

his PER (hollinger rating) was 9th in the league OVERALL last year. he's been over 20 every year after his rookie season. he's a good passing big man. and the key is he doesn't have to do anything great for la. kobe is there to score and control the offense. bynum is an excellent rebounding and defending big man. and odom will be a strong rebounder from the 3 spot. gasol will be a complimentary player, albeit a very good one. and he is the best post scorer they have.

Of the 9 only 2 are Centers, Yao and Al Jefferson. If you wanna count Boozer as a Center then I guess you can count him too but thats ONLY 3.

Very misleading with the 9 number.

The difference-maker on the Lakers is Andrew Bynum.

If you don't count Tim Duncan, Amare Stoudemire, and Dwight Howard as centers, I believe he is the best center in the game.

I think the best teams (as of now) in the West are:

(1) Spurs
(2) Lakers (if they get a healthy Bynum, they move to 3
(3) Jazz
(4) Mavericks (if they can sign Jamaal Magloire, move them ahead of the Jazz)
(5) Suns - This team just got old and rusty.
(6) New Orleans
(7) Houston
(8) Golden State/Denver
