Returning home won't heal the Nashville Predators' injuries, but it may help them play better hockey.

Following a rough road trip, the Predators look to snap out of their slump Tuesday when they face the Edmonton Oilers in the opener of a three-game homestand.

Nashville (18-8-3) leads the Central Division with 39 points despite a demanding schedule which saw the Predators play 19 of their first 29 games away from home. All the travel may have finally started to take its toll during Nashville's just-completed West Coast trip, when it dropped three of four.

On Saturday at San Jose, the Predators were within a goal of the Sharks entering the final minutes, but Josef Vasicek and Scott Hartnell committed penalties to give San Jose a two-man advantage.

Legwand in, Arnott and Sullivan out tonight

Following Tuesday's morning skate in advance of Tuesday night's home game against the Edmonton Oilers, Predators head coach Barry Trotz said that center David Legwand would be back in the lineup while forwards Steve Sullivan and Jason Arnott will not. Legwand will be returning from an arm injury suffered Dec. 4 in Phoenix. Sullivan (groin) and Arnott (knee) are day-to-day and could play in Thursday night's home game against the Ottawa Senators.

After playing a league-high 19 of their first 29 games on the road, the Nashville Predators begin a stretch tonight in which they will play 14 of their next 20 contests
(through Jan. 20) at the Gaylord Entertainment Center. The Predators have played a league-low 10 games on home ice this season, going6-1-3. Nashville has recorded at least one point (6-0-3) in each of its last 10 home contests.

The 2006 Western Conference Champion Edmonton Oilers provide the opposition tonight. Nashville was victorious in the only previous meeting between the clubs this season, a 5-3 decision at Edmonton's Rexall Place on Nov. 1. The Predators have posted a record of 2-0-2 vs. Northwest Division foes on home ice this season and 6-1-2 overall.

Both of these clubs enter tonight's contest in the midst of heated battles for the top spots in their respective divisions; Nashville has a one-point lead over the Detroit
Red Wings in the Central Division while the Oilers are tied atop the Northwest Division with the Minnesota Wild.

Game Preview: Predators vs. Oilers

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....612120366/1028

Season series: Predators lead 1-0.

Oilers storyline: Edmonton ranks first in the NHL in penalty kill, having allowed just 13 power play goals in 140 opportunities by their opponents. ... On the road the Oilers have allowed just four goals in 73 chances. … Right wing Peter Sykora, who once skated with Nashville's Jason Arnott as part of the famous "A" line in New Jersey, signed a one-year deal with Edmonton in August and now leads the Oilers in points with 28.

Predators storyline: Nashville has only two wins in its last six meetings against the Oilers, but one of those was a 5-3 decision in Edmonton on Nov. 1. … Center Josef Vasicek has five points over the last six games. … Martin Erat has four assists in the last two games. … Despite going 1-3-1 in its last five games, Nashville was second in the Western Conference going into Monday's games.

Oilers injuries: RW Ales Hemsky (shoulder) is doubtful. LW Ryan Smyth (thumb) and LW Ethan Moreau (shoulder) are on injured reserve.

Predators injuries: RW Steve Sullivan and C David Legwand are probable, C Jason Arnott (knee) is questionable, and RW Scottie Upshall (groin) and G Tomas Vokoun (thumb) are on injured reserve.

Phew! What a nailbiter! I really thought Edmonton was going to tie it up with the extra attacker on in that last minute of play. Oh well, great effort on both sides!

That was a great game to watch...
Preds prevail 3-2 in an exciting match.

Oh yeah, and Ottawa beat Detroit tonight, too!

Oilers lose tough one in Nashville

Coach Barry Trotz worried about how his Nashville Predators would respond in their first home game after spending most of this season on the road.

Paul Kariya made it a cozy homecoming.

He kept the puck alive behind the net before kicking it out to himself, and he found David Legwand in front of the net. Legwand scored with 2:45 left, and the Predators pulled out a 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the Edmonton Oilers.

Legwand scores game-winner
Preds find cure for third-period woes

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....612130455/1028

The same team that so often has struggled in third periods this season turned the tables on Tuesday, winning the battle over the final 20 minutes.

The teams split four goals over the first five minutes of the second period, with Vern Fiddler and rookie Alexander Radulov giving the Preds a 2-0 lead, only to see the Oilers (16-12-2) tie matters in a 28-second span.

With overtime looming, Predators left wing Paul Kariya outbattled Oilers defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist for a puck in the corner. He centered it to Legwand, who redirected the pass behind goalie Dwayne Roloson.

"It was nice to be on the other end of things in the third period,'' Mason said. "We've had some trouble late in third periods because we sat back and waited, but both teams really went at each other.''

Legwand gets goal in return to ice
Center comes back from arm injury

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....612130470/1028

David Legwand couldn't have made his return to the ice any better.

The Predators center, who had been out more than a week with an arm injury, returned Tuesday and scored the game winner in a 3-2 victory over visiting Edmonton.

"He brings a lot of speed and skill to our lineup," Kariya said of Legwand. "It is nice to have him back."

Legwand's presence was one the team had missed in much of last week's West Coast road trip.
