In 1966 a NYC radio station ordered it's dj's to play "Open Letter.." every 2 hours...William Roscoe quit on air and moved over to WNEW-FM and became a pioneer for FM radio in NYC

GS, I always had the impression that "Okie" was more of a satire about country music's take on the counter-culture. I could be wrong about that, though.

I believe that it was just Merle Haggard's take on the counter culture, which he found inferior to all representing his values. They didn't smoke marijuana, they got drunk on white lightn'. They didn't wear sissy beads, they still flew the flag proudly, their kids behaved well on campus and weren't occupying administration buildings and so forth. I surely did not take any of it as a satire on country values, to the contrary, it was a celebration of them while simultaneously scorning the counter culture.

I thought this was one hit wonders only...Bobbie Gentry also had the hit song "Fancy" and if my memory is correct, she also had a chartmaker in some duet she did with Glen Cambell.

Didn't John Wayne do one of those patriotic talking "songs" as well?

Not a one hit wonder, unfortunately, but the worst song of the '60's had to be "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" by Peter Paul and Mary. A bunch of washed-up has been folk singers attempting to put down rock music with sarcasm and failing miserably. The only thing they proved was how lucky we were that the 'folk revival' lasted only until Dylan realized how boring and limited it was.
