Default Few Expos memories left in Montreal

Here's a sad article I read on a few former Expos returning to Montreal for a charity softball fundraiser to combat Lou Gehrig's disease.

Few Expos memories left in Montreal - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
MONTREAL (AP) -- A tip for baseball-loving tourists in search of Montreal Expos memories: Pick the Bell Centre tour over the one at Olympic Stadium.

There's more to see at the hockey rink than at the ballpark, and that's not saying much. There is little evidence in Montreal that the Expos, who moved and became the Washington Nationals, ever existed.

A powder blue banner commemorating the French-speaking city's former National League team hangs from the rafters in the home of the NHL's famed Montreal Canadiens.

Across the banner are "Montreal Expos 1969-2004" and baseballs with Nos. 8, 10 and 30 -- the retired numbers of Rusty Staub, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson and Tim Raines. (Staub and Dawson both wore No. 10.)

Claude Raymond thought something was askew when he dropped in on the Nationals' spring training camp in Melbourne, Fla., after the team was relocated for the 2005 season.

"I went to a game with my son and I looked on the field and there's Royce Clayton wearing No. 10, Marlon Anderson with No. 8 and Mike Stanton wearing No. 30. What is the thinking behind that?" said Raymond, a native Quebecer and former Expos reliever, broadcaster and coach.

"Those numbers were retired but there they were on the field. That's not right. We had some great teams and we weren't bush leaguers. That makes me mad," he said.
They really should have won in 94.

It's very sad that there seems to be no memory of the Expos in Montreal. So make some. Have an ExposFest, invite former players. Maybe get Melnyk, Price, and Myles to help. Set up a fan club. Put out a newsletter. See if you cqan get a couple of teams to come up and play exhibition games.

There are those annual celebrity softball games right by the site of Pac Jarry. Exploit those. Use them as occasions to start petition drives for the return of baseball to Montreal. Bring all your Expos stuff. Promote the memory of the Expos and the promise of Expos II.

Keep the torch lit. If you don't do it, nobody will.

Well, lemme see... FanHome was controlled by Scout/The Insiders more or less for 4 years... I wasn't there (even though I had been a key admin on FanHome 1 and now FanHome 3) and Kevin wasn't able to call the shots so much with thanks to Scout.

So you ought to append who you're blaming -- Scout/The Insiders/Fox, whoever the hell is in control over there made it a priority to just run a board without knowing anything about the community involved.

Well, if you believe that, it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Or you can keep the torch lit. Remember the Expos. Keep the memory alive. What about an Expos Fan Club? DC had a Senators Fan Club when it was without baseball. Put out a newsletter. Discuss the Expos, the Montreal Royals, and otehr aspects of Montreal's distinguished baseball history. (What onetime big-league owner, non-Expos, was born in Montreal?)

Try having an Expos Fest. Invite Elliot Price, Stephanie Myles, and Mitch Melnyk and the other media. Bring in some former Expos to discuss Montreal baseball and sign autographs. Have vendors, displays, etc. Show highlights from the Expos' 36 years, from all special events tothe last game. Make it an annual event (preferably in the offseason.)

Call the radio programs and talk about Les Expos and about the future of baseball in Montreal.

Urge the civic officials to come up with a vaible stadium plan and talk to any team that is having stadium problems.

Use forums like this to keep the torch lit. Maybe you can get some of the old Expos posters to join. You'd hve a very vibrant and lively forum. Where are guys like Big Owe anyway?

If you hold onto the idea that there will never be baseball in Montreal again, you'll be right. If you work on promoting the return of baseball to Montreal, eventually, you'll be right about that too. Which sounds like a more desirable outcome to you?

"I need to blame someone, so I am blaming you!"

Right, as MLB and fans around the US blamed Montreal fans ultimately for killing baseball in Montreal. That shoe was fit long ago.
