Default Samsonov on Waivers

ESPN.com - NHL - Canadiens place unhappy Samsonov on waivers

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens placed forward Sergei Samsonov on waivers Tuesday, TSN of Canada reported on its Web site.

Samsonov, who signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Canadiens as a free agent after finishing last season with the Edmonton Oilers, has one goal in his last 22 games. He has seven goals and 15 assists in 52 games this season.
Interesting move but IMO it had to happen. Obviously know one wanted him as they were trying to trade him and $3,500,000 for 7 goals at this point in the season is unacceptable. This frees up salary for a rental heading into the play-offs and salary to possibly re-sign both Souray and Markov in the offseason.

He's minors bound. No one will claim that salary either.

Craig Rivet was placed on IR with the flu and won't be available until Wednesday at the earliest. David Aebischer will start, as he is 2-0-0 against Ottawa this season. Michael Ryder has been dropped to fourth line, as confirmed by head coach Guy Carbonneau. Andrei Markov, Steve Begin and Sergei Samsonov are all in the lineup, while Garth Murray, Aaron Downey and Alex Perezhogin will all be healthy scratches. - TSN
So I guess they have decided to keep Samsonov around and maybe getting put on waivers will be a wake up call for Sergei and maybe he will start to play hard. Im kind of disappointed Perezhogin is scratched. I like him as a player and was looking forward to watching him today. Also of note is Ryder has been demoted to fourth line duty with Begin and Lapierre. I know he has been struggling mightingly but if you look at Koivu and Higgins its not entirely his fault because they have been just as bad, if not worse. Kovalev meanwhile has been promoted to the first line to play with Koivu and Higgins. Hopefully those 3 can break out of there slumps.

Forward lines for tonight according to TSN:
Quote:
Forwards
Higgins - Koivu - Kovalev
Latendresse - Plek. - Samsonov
Johnson - Bonk - Streit
Begin - Lapierre - Ryder

Samsonov is running out of options. He better learn to get his nose dirty in traffic again.
