Goaltender Carey Price is back with the Canadiens and the question once again is: Will the team be able to find enough work for him to develop?
Cristobal Huet will make his 13th consecutive start tonight when the Ottawa Senators visit the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., Sportsnet, RDS, CJAD Radio-800), but don't be surprised if Price is in goal Thursday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs are in town. The rookie, who was recalled from the Hamilton Bulldogs yesterday, is 3-0 against the Leafs this season. Price was sent down to the minors on Jan. 8 when it became obvious that Huet was playing well enough to start the majority of the games. The Canadiens recalled Jaroslav Halak, but he was limited to one relief performance in his most recent stint in Montreal. He was returned to Hamilton yesterday. Canadiens goaltending coach Rollie Melanson spent some time with Price in Steeltown during the all-star break and said that the youngster had regained his confidence after a couple of shaky games in the minors. "If (general manager Bob Gainey) decides to call him back up, we have to give him some games," Melanson said on the weekend. "By the end of the season, he has to have 50 games under his belt." Price is currently sitting at 29 games with 19 in Montreal and the rest in Hamilton, and that 50 may be an elusive number if Huet continues to be No. 1. Price beat Manitoba twice on the weekend, giving up only one goal on 46 shots. The Canadiens had planned to recall him Sunday night, but the move was postponed when coach Guy Carbonneau decided not to hold a practice yesterday. Price remained in Hamilton for one last workout with the Bulldogs. Tonight, the Canadiens will attempt to snap a six-game losing streak against Ottawa, and the timing might be right. The Senators are banged up both physically and emotionally as they come into the Bell Centre for what ranks as a pivotal game for both clubs. Ottawa is first in the Eastern Conference standings, but its once-commanding lead has eroded because of injuries and continuing uncertainty over the team's goaltending. The Canadiens have crept to within three points of the Senators, who have lost seven of their last 10 games. There was no good news for the Senators yesterday. They had hoped Daniel Alfredsson would return from a hip flexor, but coach John Paddock said the captain will not dress tonight. Paddock hopes that both Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, who has missed more than three weeks with a shoulder injury, will be in the lineup Saturday when the Canadiens travel to Ottawa for a rematch. How important are Alfredsson and Heatley to the Sens' success? When they are healthy, they are among the top 10 scorers in the NHL, and they have played key roles in the Senators' three wins against Montreal this season. Ottawa has outscored the Canadiens 11-6 with Alfredsson scoring three goals and collecting five assists, while Heatley has two goals and four assists. Paddock is waiting for one of his goaltenders to claim the No. 1 job. Martin Gerber returns to the nets tonight after Ray Emery, who was fined $14,000 last week for missing a practice, was on the losing end of a 4-2 count Saturday against Toronto.
