Minnesota Wild sign defenseman Andre Lakos

By Derek Felska | June 16th, 2007

The Minnesota Wild announced today that it has signed towering 6′6″ 240lbs defenseman Andre Lakos. Lakos has played the last two seasons in Austria for Salzburg EC; and this season he enjoyed great success scoring 16 goals, 28 assists and 125 penalty minutes in 52 games. The Vienna, Austria-native does have previous hockey experience in North America when he played junior for the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors and Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League. Originally drafted in the 3rd round (95th Overall) by the New Jersey Devils in the 1999; Lakos took his career from major junior to the American Hockey League where he played 5 seasons for Albany River Rats, Utah Grizzlies and Syracuse Crunch respectively.

The big blueliner also has represented his native Austria at the World Championships; and in this year’s tournament in Moscow Lakos had 3 goals and 1 assist in six games. Lakos is known for having a big shot as well as a bit of mean streak even though it seems to be more tempered in his time playing in North America. The Wild would like to see him utilize his size, and his big shot back in the organization. It is no big secret the Wild are looking to upgrade in terms of grit and physicality and the team feels Lakos could just be the sort of player the team is looking for; a big, mean defenseman. On the press release issued on wild.com, Wild Assistant General Manager Tom Lynn had this to say about their newest defenseman, “Andre has been a top performer at the international level the last two seasons, we have seen his game mature and feel he is ready to re-establish himself in North America.” Looking at Lakos, he bears an uncanny resemblance to Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Komisarek and the Wild are hoping the big Austrian can deliver a physical presence rather similar to the tough American-born blueliner. Hopefully the Wild’s optimism is not misplaced.
