Wild acquire centre Dominic Moore from Pittsburgh for 3rd round pick By Derek Felska | February 27th, 2007 The Minnesota Wild took another (and likely final) step towards solidifying its playoff lineup when it traded a 3rd round selection in the 2007 Entry draft for Pittsburgh Penguins’ centre Dominic Moore. Moore, the 26-year old native of Thornhill, Ontario was originally selected by the New York Rangers (95th Overall) in 2000. The 6′0″ 195-centreman is noted for his solid penalty killing ability, excellent work ethic night in and out, and has decent speed and skating ability. He has played 146 games in the NHL with a pretty modest 15 goals, 21 assists and 74 penalty minutes. This season with the Penguins he has 6 goals, 9 assists and 46 penalty minutes. Yet the one statistic that likely earned the Harvard graduate a trip to the State of Hockey was his 51.6% faceoff percentage. The Wild are among the league’s worst teams when it comes to winning faceoffs, and this acquisition was a clear message that the team’s faceoff performance needs a boost. While the Wild were rumored to be one of the last teams interested in Yanic Perreault who not only provides a level of offense, not to mention a league leading 62.6% faceoff winning percentage. Moore’s arrival will likely move Thief River Falls, MN-native Wyatt Smith off of the 4th line and be paired with Branko Radivojevic and either Stephane Veilleux or Derek Boogaard. With fellow Western Conference teams giving up high draft selections and prospects for players like Todd Bertuzzi (Detroit), Bill Guerin (San Jose), and Peter Forsberg (Nashville) the Wild’s decision to go with Moore demonstrates a much more tempered response as teams ready themselves for the post-season. Moves made by teams in the Northwest Division have been rather mild by comparison, with Brad Stuart and Craig Conroy going to Calgary; Bryan Smolinski and Brent Sopel to Vancouver. Minnesota, Colorado and Edmonton have only made a token amount of moves. While the acquisition of Moore may not yield big headlines or garner near the attention of a deal involving a ”big name” player like Bill Guerin or Peter Forsberg, it sounds like Moore is custom built for the Wild. A relatively young player who is a hard worker, and is defensively responsible. Wild Head Coach Jacques Lemaire has consistantly demonstrated an ability to get the most out of players that fit Moore’s description. Hopefully he can work that magic once again. Welcome to the State of Hockey Dominic Moore!
