Default Herb Carneal

I first met Mr. Carneal on the 1984 Winter Caravan Stop in Winona, along with Tony Oliva, and Tim Laudner. He was the nicest guy even to a little snot nosed Fifth grader just looking to get some autographs... (I think I asked him for 2 or 3 and he signed everything. That year was the first that KWNO was an affiliate for CCO. And I remember later in the year Herb describing in such detail a butt whopping that Jim Rice and the Red Sox put on the Twins I felt like I was at Fenway park. Then the topper was that season ending series in Cleveland when Jamie Quirk put an swift and sudden end to the playoff hopes. In 1987 friends and I would huddle around the radio and listen to games, and hope that we could get into the playoffs, and when the Twins clinched in Texas I recorded that post game celebration, and still have it on tape today, and enjoy listening to Herb describe the excitement that was going on in that locker room. But as with Tom Kelly, Herb let the players take center stage, injecting a comment only when it added to the moment. As I went to college and in the early days before the internet, on a clear night I could pick up WCCO's brodcasts clear out in the middle of MONTANA! Needless to say it helped with several long nights with bouts of homesickness. Later on as I moved to Milwaukee and one night was channel surfing I realized I didn't need XM Radio to listen to the Twins, I just needed to turn my dial to the 830 and there were Herb and John, and instead of listening to Uek, to update the score while the Brewers played, I could travel down I 43 and listen to my Twins... I was so upset last summer when I heard that the Twins were ending their relationship with WCCO, I couldn't believe that they would let a few hundred thousand dollars stand in the way, and in a way it's fitting that Herb didn't do a regular season game with that other station. I closing I wish you good health and the memories that Herb Carneal gave to a lot of Minnesotans and that we know he's in a better place.
I hope Herb says hi to Bob and Kirby for us
