Exclamation Mauer, Twins discussing four-year deal

The Twins and Joe Mauer are reportedly discussing a four-year, $33 million contract.

That sounds about right. We guessed $32 million for four years or $45 million for five when talks started up back in December. Mauer has three years of arbitration remaining, so a four-year deal would take care of his first year of free agency. He asked for $4.5 million and was offered $3.3 million for 2007.

Joe Mauer's four-year deal with the Twins is worth $33 million and includes a no-trade provision for three teams per year.

Mauer gets $3.75 million this year, $6.25 million in 2008, $10.5 million in 2009 and $12.5 million in 2010. It looks like a pretty good deal for both sides. Mauer stood to land a huge contract as a free agent after 2009, but since he is a catcher (increasing his chances of injury), it wasn't a bad move for him to postpone free agency for a year in return for being set for life.
