In a recently posted column on ESPN.com, Hall of Fame baseball writer Peter Gammons addresses the importance of pitchers making at least 30 starts a season, if their teams are to be competitive. Gammons listed nine pitchers whose performances are crucial for their team's chances in 2007, and No. 1 on that list is the Brewers' Ben Sheets.

"If Sheets, at 28, has his breakout year and approaches 20 wins, the Brewers will be right in the race," Gammons writes.

Gammons isn't telling Brewers fans anything they don't know. After missing half of last season with ongoing shoulder problems, Sheets must stay off the disabled list this year for the Brewers to have any chance in the NL Central.

Sheets is a lot better than his 61-69 career record indicates but I think if we have any chance of making the Play-offs he is going to need to have around 17 wins. Sure he didn't get the run support in the past but that's not something pitchers can count on in a given game. Hopefully his shoulder is going to be ok and his back pains he complained about earlier this winter are nothing.
