Catcher's retirement bad sign for Koskie
Quote:
For those wondering if Corey Koskie will play any third base for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007, it was not encouraging when San Francisco catcher Mike Matheny announced his retirement from baseball due to lingering effects of post-concussion syndrome.
Matheny, who began his career with the Brewers, missed the final four months of last season after a series of foul tips off his catcher's mask resulted in the syndrome, which causes nausea, dizziness and a variety of other symptoms, including memory loss.
It was hoped Matheny, 36, would be able to return in 2007 to finish the three-year contract he signed with the Giants, but continued fogginess and the possibility of more damage prompted him to call it a career. He really had no choice after his doctor wouldn't clear him to play.
