Post Brewers claim Salas off waivers

Quote:
MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers took a chance Thursday on a live arm, claiming right-handed reliever Marino Salas off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Salas, who is from the Dominican Republic, has Minor League options remaining and is not expected to compete for a spot in the Brewers' 2007 bullpen, but he could provide some depth in the coming years. He turns 26 on Friday.

"Enough of our scouts liked his arm strength to spend a waiver claim on him," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "He has a live arm and he throws strikes. We'll have to work on his secondary pitches. That was the one knock on him in the reports. But he pitched well in the second half of last year and he pitched well in the instructional league."
