Post Brewers meet with Orioles on Day 1

Milwaukee GM Melvin may use outfield surplus to advantage

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Brewers' contingent met on Monday with officials from the Baltimore Orioles and one other club regarding Milwaukee's stable of corner outfielders, but it was a mostly quiet Day 1 of baseball's Winter Meetings.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said that he had two face-to-face meetings at The Dolphin Hotel and discussed options with "a bunch" of other clubs on the phone. Much of the talk centered on outfielders Geoff Jenkins and Kevin Mench, but the Boston Red Sox were among a handful of clubs that inquired on the availability of deposed Brewers closer Derrick Turnbow.

"The clubs we're talking to don't ask about our pitching for the most part," Melvin said. "They know that our outfield is where our depth is. That's our strength. Maybe they'll ask about a reliever, but they know we're not going to trade [Chris] Capuano or [Dave] Bush."

Maybe the Mench for Lopez trade will get revived. Good to see Melvin has no intention of trading Bush or Capuano. Bush, Capuano, and a healthy Ben Sheets are names I want to see as pitchers next season. I think we will get a clearer picture for the other two spots after the winter meetings.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel believes the Brewers have a deal in place that would send Kevin Mench to Baltimore for Rodrigo Lopez in the event the Orioles fail to sign Luis Gonzalez.

Mench for Lopez is an old rumor, of course, but it sounds as if both teams have revisited it. That would seem to mean that talks between the Phillies and Brewers regarding Jon Lieber have fallen through.

Yuck, if Melvin says Mench has value why are we trading him for a 30 year old pitcher who had a 5.90 ERA last year?

Well, trwi7 it is quite simple.

It is as simple as the fact that Melvin has painted himself into a corner.

First he said that hall was moving to the Outfield then he signs Counsell then he offers Graffanino Arbitration expecting him to turn it down and sign elsewhere and we would get extra draft picks but Accepts it putting him a spot where he can't change his mind about Hall.

Then becouse they have to play Hall and Hart everyday. It gives them a platoon of Jenkins/Gross/Mench/Gwynn/Clark/Nix for one outfield slot and simply that isn't going to work.

So Melvin says Mench has value becouse a few of them must go.
