Brewers ready to field calls about pitching surplus
JS Online: Brewers ready to field calls about pitching surplus
Quote:
The Milwaukee Brewers were one of the few teams that went to the winter meetings in Nashville with a surplus of starting pitching.
"I thought our phones would be ringing off the hook, (with teams) looking for them," said manager Ned Yost.
Instead, the Brewers' contingent fielded a surprisingly small number of serious queries about their starting pitchers. One reason was that many teams were focusing on the big fish in the pond, such as Minnesota's Johan Santana, Oakland's Dan Haren and Joe Blanton, and Baltimore's Eric Bedard.
Others were kicking the tires on free agents such as Carlos Silva, Livan Hernandez and Kyle Lohse, though the tread is a bit thin there.
When those pitchers land some where, or teams give up trying, interested parties are expected to get back to the Brewers' available arms, such as Chris Capuano, Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas.
