Talking Brewers acquire Salomon Torres

The Official Site of Milwaukee Brewers: Official Info: Press Release

Quote:
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers today acquired RHP Salomon Torres from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for RHP Marino Salas and RHP Kevin Roberts. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

"Salomon brings experience and durability to our bullpen," said Melvin. "He has been a workhorse throughout his career and will bring to our staff a multiple-inning reliever."

Wow, What a great Trade. Salomon is a pitcher that did a great job for the Pirates last year and a few of my fantasy Baseball teams too and I really think he is a really good pitcher and I would expect him to give Turnbow a run for his money as one of the possable for the Closer role.

And sence the Brewers did not have to give up the farm to get him I view this as a great Trade. Way to go Doug Melvin you got me excited on this one.

Default Torres had issues in Pittsburgh

Torres had issues in Pittsburgh - Brewers Blog

Quote:
I haven't talked to general manager Doug Melvin yet about acquiring Pittsburgh reliever Salomon Torres but apparently the Pirates just wanted to be rid of Torres after a tumultuous year.

Torres filed a grievance against the Pirates last March because he said they induced him to sign a below-market contract with the promise that the club would rent his baseball training complex in the Dominican Republic. Torres did not use an agent and signed a two-year, $6.2 million deal with a club option for 2009 at $3.75 million.

Torres said the Pirates promised to rent his complex for $1.5 million but when they didn't, he leased it to Texas and filed his grievance. He eventually dropped the grievance in August but apparently there were hard feelings on both sides, though then-GM Dave Littlefield since was fired.

Salomon Torres: Would Rather Retire than Move to Milwaukee

Quote:
Update: Torres claims he may retire rather than report to Milwaukee because of his family's roots in suburban Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Recommendation: Torres, 36, retired once before following the 1997 season. "It's a giant move, and I have to make a decision if I want to go forward," Torres said. "I just need to talk to my family. I can tell you this: If I go to Milwaukee, I'm going to give my heart and soul to the Brewers." Torres has always been an independent-minded person but it would be surprising if he calls it a career.

Hopefully he changes his mind on coming to Milwaukee. When I heard we first got Salomon I thought it was a great pickup because after all he is a workhorse out of the bullpen. That would be a blow if he would retire because Milwaukee could really use him.

I wouldn't worry about it. It is all understandable that he feel the way he feels but the Brewers will talk with him and let him know that he is importent to them and that they will be willing to do anything to make it easier for him and his family and I sure his family will tell him that they are willing to deal with the change so that he can finaly pitch for a Playoff contender something that wasn't possable in Pittsburgh.

So he will cool down and everyone will not let it come to that.

Just got back from the Eric Gagne press conference at Miller Park. General manager Doug Melvin was feeling really good about his bullpen because not only does he have Gagne as his closer, Salomon Torres told him today he would report instead of retiring.
