Arrow Brewers acquire free agent David Riske

The Official Site of Milwaukee Brewers: Official Info: Press Release

Quote:
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers today signed right-handed pitcher David Riske to a three-year contract. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.
"David has proven that he can pitch effectively at the back end of the bullpen," said Melvin. "His durability and consistency will be a great asset to our ballclub."

Riske, 31, spent last season with Kansas City, where he went 1-4 with a 2.45 ERA and 4 saves in 65 relief appearances. After struggling with a 6.97 ERA in April (10.1ip, 8er), he went on to post a 1.67 ERA the rest of the season (59.1ip, 11er). His overall 2.45 ERA ranked 11th among American League relievers in 2007 (minimum 50.0 innings).

Is the goal to get a flyball pitcher so that they won't have to count on Braun's defense?

Nashville - The Brewers made room on their 40-man roster for newly signed reliever David Riske by designating outfielder Laynce Nix for assignment.

The Brewers have 10 days to trade Nix, release him or have him accept a minor league assignment.

Default Nix isn't gone... yet

Nix isn't gone... yet - Brewers Blog

Quote:
Nashville - To make room on their 40-man roster for reliever David Riske, the Brewers designated outfielder Laynce Nix for assignment. They immediately worked out a new contract with him with the understanding he'd have to clear outright waivers to go to the minors.

"If he clears, he'll come to camp with us," said assistant general manager Gord Ash. "If he's claimed, then away he goes. If not, he'll be assigned to Triple-A. We like the depth he gives us if he remains."

Ash said the Brewers talked to other clubs about a trade for Nix but no agreement was reached. Any of those teams now can claim him for the $20,000 waiver price.

Good pickup, he's not a lights out pitcher, but he gets the job done. With the price of relievers so high I don't see what is so bad about this pickup. He might even be the closer. I would rather have him than Scott Linebrink.
