Brewers to address outfield at Meetings
MILWAUKEE -- Brewers general manager Doug Melvin hopes to return from next week's Winter Meetings in Orlando with a better idea of what his 2007 outfield will look like. "We can't have nine outfielders on our team," he said. The nine currently on the roster are Drew Anderson, Brady Clark, Gabe Gross, Tony Gwynn Jr., Bill Hall, Corey Hart, Geoff Jenkins, Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix. Hall's name is new to the list -- he's been an infielder his entire career. The Brewers, who have a core of young infielders, will ask him to move to the outfield next season. Brewers.com |

Should be very interesting. I am very excited to see what will happen. I'll say two outfielders get traded for sure in separate deals. By dealing with the D-Backs last week it showed Melvin couldn't wait to start dealing and putting the pieces together for 2007.

Brewers hunt for bargains
As meetings near, Melvin studies outfield situation Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has made significant trades at each of the past two major-league winter meetings, but he's not sure how easy it will be to keep that streak alive. "I think it's going to be active with free agents, especially with the top pitchers still on the market," said Melvin, who is scheduled to leave tonight for the meetings that begin Monday in Orlando, Fla. "Once the pitchers get knocked off, there could be some trades. Otherwise, it could be quiet." Teams focused primarily on signing free-agent hitters in past weeks, with the likes of Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, Frank Thomas, Gary Matthews Jr. and Juan Pierre switching work addresses. But the top available pitchers remain on the market, such as Barry Zito, Greg Maddux, Jason Schmidt, Jeff Weaver and Jeff Suppan. The Brewers won't be in the bidding for any of those names, but Melvin said he would remain on the lookout for affordable pitching, preferably a starter. His top priority, however, remains sorting out his outfield situation. JSONLINE |

I am pretty happy with our starting pitching situation. But it would be nice to get one solid second string starter but it's not truly necessary. Our back-end of the rotation will have some competition to see who gets in.
