After his rest Barry hit two out today and now sits within striking distance of Hammerin' Hank Aaron. Somehow life has managed a storyline like a movie with Barry going to Milwaukee former home town for Aaron and the home of the club that Bud Selig once owned.
Things are coming to a head

I wouldn't be surprised if it takes him another two weeks... it's ridiculous to think Bud Selig should be required to follow Bonds around.
It's sad too, because this will no long be "the greatest record in sports." (so long as Bonds holds it) |

The greatest record in sports is DiMaggio's 56 anyway. 755 is about consistancy and good health. Had Griffey stayed healthy he would have done it, ARod and Pujols are thought to be the next two to ascend towards it if they stay healthy so whatever....
56 is something amazing, and maybe only Ichiro on steroids has a chance at ever breaking it.

All these statistical oddities entail an element of good fortune as well... not mentioning the flaws in comparing statistics developed in vastly different eras of the game. If Bonds' record leads people to reconsider the veneration of the record books a bit, perhaps it's a good thing...
(not to cast aspersion upon DiMaggio...) |

Selig was in attendance yesterday and plans to watch the entire series in Milwaukee. Bonds was 0-4. Bonds is 1 for 6 facing Dave Bush today's Brewer pitcher. First pitch is just about an hour away.

I remember when Hank Aaron was 2 homeruns away from Ruth's record, the Braves were going to sit Aaron out against Cincinnati on the road so that Hank could have a chance to tie and break the record at home. Baseball forced the Braves to play Aaron on the road who went on to tie the record against the Reds and then broke the record in Atlanta against the Dodgers. Yet Barry (Special treatment) Bonds gets to sit out on the road against Milwaukee and then play at home with a chance to tie and break the record. Ironically against the Braves.

Poetic justice would be all the muscles in his legs simultaneously disintegrating from steroid use just as he swings on 754 home runs.
If not, while I'm not particularly fond of the guy, lets hope A-Rod is there to restore some semblance of legitimacy to the record in 12 or so years. |

Have to disagree, there, Tyler.
Going back to 1939 as a wee kid, lucky enough to have seen many greats before they went off to WW II [and missing seeing Lou Gehrig in action by one season], Bonds is in an elite class of four hitters, after which come all the rest. As the story of Lou Gehrig's ALS unfolded, I did see films of him in action before the tragic illness struck him down. No player since, except Bonds, has exhibited that short, sudden, devastating stroke that Gehrig had. The elite 4 are Ruth, Williams, Gehrig and Bonds; and Bonds is the legitimate heir to the HR crown, not having a pitching career and personal excess; or 2 stints in wartime military service; or ALS to abbreviate his career opportunities. Bonds is money in the bank. Pujols, A-Rod and Vlad are terrific; but at this point, they are promissory notes. |

Just to follow up on my support of Bonds above, here are career and career to date on the four elites I named above + defending HR champ Hank Aaron + some active greats. Since we're talking HR records here, figures focus on two things:
1. HR production as a percentage of officially charged at-bats; 2. Offensive total base production expressed as TB per charged AB, which I believe, reflects overall intensity of offensive power generated per AB. Player............AB..........HR...........TB..... ..TB/AB..........HR%AB Bonds..........9736........753.........5915..... .608............7.73% Ruth............8398........714.........5793.... .690............8.50% Williams........7706........521.........4884.... .634............6.76% Gehrig..........8001........493.........5060.... .632............6.16% Guerrero.......5851........352.........3990.... .579............6.02% Pujols...........3834........272.........2390.... .623............7.09% A-Rod...........7128.......498..........4115.... .577............6.99% Aaron..........12364.......755..........6856.... .555............6.11% Last edited by nanwynnfan; 07-23-2007 at 12:12 PM. |
