I'm a Yankees fan. Yes, boo me. I can live with it. Well, it's that time of year again, the time where everyone who knows me asks "how about those Yanks this year, think they'll take the division?" Sure the Red Sox and Blue Jays strengthened their lineups, and sure the Yankees didn't really bite at the free agent market, but here are my 3 reasons the Yankees won't bust in 2007. BTW, these aren't secrets, they do it every year.
1) Work Ethic 2) Clutch 3) Derek Jeter (who ironically possess the first two!) |

Actually, that would be appropriate instead of ironic. This from an avowed Jeter-hater, even.
No, the Yankees won't be a bust, but I have a hard time saying that Derek Jeter will turn water to wine and save their season by himself. He's just one very good player, although he's grossly overrated by Yankee fans. Very Good, yes -- particularly on Offense. Not so much on Defense, except for your occasional "clutch" play. Godlike, no. |

Captain Intangibles!
I still find it hilarious that ESPN thought that people calling Jeter that were complimenting him and not mocking him.

There was a commercial on ESPN classic that I seen a year or so ago, and I think it was talking about them showing the 2001 WS, and the guy in the commercial said something along the lines of "Even Red Sox fans call Jeter Captain Intangibles!"

That is classic. Overrated? It's nuts. He's going to be great again this year and he'll hit a ball in the playoffs unlike A-Rod. I like A-Rod and all, but I was happier when Soriano was playing second.
I'm the first pick overall this year in our draft...my question is this....Pujols or Santana? Should I buy the Yankees on fantasy sports stocks dot com? |

Pujols, always. But that's a better question for the Fantasy Baseball Board.

Anybody who honestly rates one player over another based upon the small sample size that is the playoffs, should probably have their head examined anyways.
Derek Jeter isn't, has never been, and never will be even close to the caliber of player that Alex Rodriguez is. Quote:

ARod didn't always choke either...In the 2000 playoffs he batted .308 against the White Sox, then in the next series against the Yankees he batted .409 with 2 HRs. Then in his first series as a Yankee in the playoffs he batted .421 with a HR against the Red Sox.
My point was that, either way, it got so bad for Soriano that he was actually benched in the Series...

He does....he's been MVP runner-up for some time. Don't get me wrong....I like Cano, alot. I just like Soriano the same...yes he was benched...got me there...but A-Rod (who is going to the HOF and should be) has something about him that comes the playoffs (especially last year) just doesn't seem right.
If players can't be judged on the playoffs (when it counts most), what good is it anyway? A player is judged on their character just the same as their stats. Sorry, but right now, A-Rod's missing something come October I hope he proves me wrong. |

They're not. That's the whole point. The playoffs are not a good way to measure a ballplayer's worth. Hell there really not a good way to measure a teams worth either. If the 2006 playoffs proved anything, it's that the postseason is mostly random and the team that wins the World Series is generally not really the best team in baseball.
Between 10-19 games is just too small a sample size to draw any conclusions to be worthwhile.

ARod 8.23 and 6.15 a - 34%, but it is notable that Alex performed much better than Jeter in hundreds of regular season games...

A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement. |
