Rule Changes

Also, games that are called with a tie score will now be resumed, rather than replayed entirely.

I like these rule changes. I expect we will see some hitters having some major problems with having to keep one foot in the batters box at all times. Some of these batters like to take walks all around the place behind the plate just to try to slow the pitcher down.

Gender? Has anybody noticed that the rules do not require a "player" to be human being? It would not be a violation of the existing rules to train a retired greyhound to pinch run, and proceed to the next base on the signal of a coach/wrangler.

Good thing that this rule doesn't affect high school baseball, because I always stretch my legs between pitches. It's my habit, I couldn't imagine not doing it in between pitches.

I wonder if they punish people who swing and miss badly, and then walk around the plate. Ken Griffey Jr. does this a lot when he misses.

I've been known tomake blanket statements before, and here comes another one:
EVERY rule that is designed to "speed up the game" is a BAD rule. I have never heard a MLB player quoted as saying the game is too long. I have never heard an adult knowledgeable spectator who spent 2 hours parking his car and $80 for a pair of tickets whine because the game was not shorter than a movie. The ONLY people I've ever heard complaining about the length of games are the media, who have to sit throught the damned thing until the bitter end for the same pay. Has anybody noticed that more people (used to) go to double-headers (when there were such things) than single games? Why do you suppolse that occurred, if everyone wanted to leave after 90 minutes? If the guys who cover baseball for the media hate sitting through 2-hour ball games, let them get a job at a body-and-fenbder shop or something. There are plenty of other writers who love baseball and would be glad to sit and watch baseball all night. If shorter games are really so imperative, why not just play the game the same way, but shorten it to seven innings? Or five. Make the reporters happy, so they will quit badmouthing the game.

Good insight, jtur, but I think it's more about the TV audience and the TV people wanting to make them happy. I am sure they want people watching any particular event for as long as possible, but in the age of remote controls and MANY more cable options, they would rather hold them rapt, which means a more fast-paced game.

Absolutely this is all about the TV viewers, which will be intriguing to see what happens when I can DVR the game and fastforward through all the crap.

watching a show on the DVR is currently not reflected in the Nielson's ratings.

I'm an adult knowledgable spectator, and I find the games move too slowly.

Now, note I didn't say they were too LONG; I said they're too SLOW. As a matter of logic, moving too slowly makes them longer, so long games are a symptom of the problem, but I do find they've gotten very slow. And the main difference in making them slow down over the last 20 years is batters incessantly stepping out of the box to adjust various articles of clothing. There's no reason that should be allowed.

in my opion i like the longer games especially the extra inning games it makes the game more exciting and i love them being long because i just love being at the ballpark and watching a baseball game

I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement.
