FOX Sports - MLB - Power Rankings

Quote:
MLB Power Rankings Week Of 02/06/2007
Rk Team Last Wk Rise/Fall High/Low Comment
1 Yankees 1 - 1/7 Powerhouse offense capable of scoring 1,000 runs on the season, improved rotation, improved right-handed relief corps, decent bench for a change, Mariano Rivera.

2 Indians 14 (+12) 2/19 A surprise ranking? Perhaps. But the Tribe returns one of the best offenses in baseball and an underrated rotation. As well, the bullpen—the team’s weak point last season—has been significantly upgraded over the winter. Their strong run differential in 2006 also portends a big jump in the standings.

3 Mets 3 - 1/8 Without question the class of the NL. The rotation is the soft underbelly, but the Mets have plenty of arms in the mix. The offense is the best in the senior circuit, and Billy Wagner remains an elite, shutdown closer.

4 Tigers 2 (-2) 1/10 One-hit wonders? Nope, the Tigers are for real. The offense, even with the addition of Gary Sheffield, might slip a bit, but the rotation will again be exceptional. In particular, Jeremy Bonderman is a stealth Cy Young contender in ’07. Deep bullpen, as well.

5 Red Sox 9 (+4) 1/10 The Sox have certainly improved themselves over the winter, but keep in mind this is team that posted a negative run differential last season. “Dice K” is the real thing, and Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew both address manifest weaknesses. Because of the strength of AL Central in tandem with the unbalanced schedule, the Sox may be your Wild Card favorites.
I don't know about this Indians ranked 2 this also has mets first in NL(2end overall) D-backs seconed in NL(9th Overall) and Dodgers third in NL (11th Overall)

It's interesting that at the bottom of the list is the Washington Nationals. After putting up a .500 season in 2005, the Nationals sure have taken a turn for the worst. Also, I don't see the Yankees as the strongest team in their division, much less the majors. Their rotation is better, but still not great.

Phillies being ranked 15th is a little low. I think somewhere in the 8-12 range would have been more accurate.

In the fan poll rankings, the Phillies are all the way down at #22. The Yankees are much lower also, which I agree with.

Just for fun, by division

AL East: NYY #1, Bos #5, Tor #14, Balt #20, TB #27
AL Central: Cle #2, Det #4, CWS #6, Minn #7, KC #28
AL West: LAA #8, Oak #10, Tex #17, Sea #24

NL East: NYM #3, Phil #15, Atl #19, Flor #23, DC #30
NL Central: StL #13, ChC #16, Mil #18, Hou #21, Cinci #26, Pitt #29
NL West: AZ #9, LAD #11, SD #12, Col #22, SF #25

It looks as if Perry's opinion on the strongest division is clearly the AL Central and the worst is clearly the NL Central.

If the Phillies get bullpen help, they should definitely move up from 15. That's the Phillies only weakness, besides the manager.

Yet, if Foxsports had a post titled "MLB odds of winning the 2007 World Championship" authored by Willy the Monkey, people would read that, too. If his employers don't take into account the general opinion of their employee, it's their own fault for keeping him employed. Do I read his stuff? Yes. But, he's still a tool.
