It's a matter of time before an active male professional athlete comes out. When he does, he will have a really difficult time and will likely be driven out of the league (whatever sport it is) before his career would have ended otherwise. The next guy will probably have a somewhat easier, but still extremely difficult time. Eventually, it will not be that big a deal and it will eventually reach a point where people will look back at the attitudes of shock and revulsion espoused by Tim Hardaway, Shockey, et al. and wonder what the heck they were so worked up about.

They key there is "worked up." When someone reacts that strongly to the issue of homosexuality, I immediately wonder what personal issues they are wrestling over the subject.
