Default The Revised Lineup Rule

Closers don't always face the opposition's best hitters. The Revised Lineup Rule would change that.

The Revised Lineup Rule: Closers Such As Rivera, Wagner, and Hoffman Must Earn Their Money

Maybe pitchers on the trailing team should be allowed to pick who they pitch too. Woudln't that make things more fair?

"Why is worse than the DH?"

***********************************

... because the DH was adopted to put a charge into the offense in the batting pits of the '60s, when the mound had to be lowered seemingly to make scoring runs possible.

It was an option that one League chose to inaugurate and one chose to decline; but it merlely selected an offensive position, singularly noted for weak hitting AND a unique specialization, recognized the specializtion aspect, and inserted the most difficult skill possible in its place on a team.

This ludicrous idea turns strategy on its head:

-where is the payoff for skillful planning of the lineup card, in-game battin slot switches and moves, use of utility players for key offensive roles, maximizing shortcomings by alternate tactics [bunt, take one for the team, contact hitter for hit and run?

-where is the reward for effective pitching through the heart of the order at least three times and keeping your team in the lead?

-it's like kids' games, where a losing player errs or fails to execute a plan and cries "Hindu!" "Do-over!" [the child's play "Mulligan"].

In fact, it's like giving a touring pr in the Masters a Mulligan because his key tee shot went awry.

It's too stupid for serious consideration.

While I don't like the DH, the DH is assigned a certain position in the lineup and must bat in that spot the entire game. Moving people around and sending whoever you want to bat is a totally different thing.

You are suggesting that the rules of baseball be changed for no other reason than because closers get paid too much money? Here's a better rule change. Pay them less money.
