The departure has been announced. The most enjoyable aspect of it was Steinbrenner's sputtering rage at someone who failed to recognize the divine right of the Yankees.

Funny... George didn't mind the idea of paying top dollar for the best players in the 70's. Payback's a *****, eh George?

Not really. It looks like he's capitulating to A-Rod's demands, after panicking over the Yankees' chances to compete next year without him.

It sounds like he'll be signing a 10 year/$275 million contract, plus easily obtainable incentives. This breaks his own record for largest contract in big league history (10 years/$252 million.) Let's see how happy the Yankees are with this deal 3-5 years from now when he's a .260/20 HR/75 RBI designated hitter.

At some point, signing all of these older players to long-term contracts is going to come back to haunt them. They can't all stay good forever, can they? I keep waiting for them to completely implode and it never happens.

Maybe not. Ten years from now, maybe half the guys in the league will be making 27 million a year.
