The departure has been announced. The most enjoyable aspect of it was Steinbrenner's sputtering rage at someone who failed to recognize the divine right of the Yankees.
Quote: "It's clear he didn't want to be a Yankee," Steinbrenner told the New York Daily News. "He doesn't understand the privilege of being a Yankee on a team where the owners are willing to pay $200 million to put a winning product on the field. "I don't want anybody on my team that doesn't want to be a Yankee." ESPN - Agent: A-Rod opts out of Yankees contract - MLB Not only is the statement one of massive arrogance, but he even tacked on the pathetic "We didn't want you anyway" at the end. |

It sounds like he'll be signing a 10 year/$275 million contract, plus easily obtainable incentives. This breaks his own record for largest contract in big league history (10 years/$252 million.) Let's see how happy the Yankees are with this deal 3-5 years from now when he's a .260/20 HR/75 RBI designated hitter. At some point, signing all of these older players to long-term contracts is going to come back to haunt them. They can't all stay good forever, can they? I keep waiting for them to completely implode and it never happens. |
