Default Veteran goaltender Sean Burke retires

Sean Burke

Veteran NHL goaltender Sean Burke has called it a career.
The 40-year-old Burke made the official announcement on Tuesday ending a distinguished NHL and international hockey career.
"I have been very fortunate to enjoy a long and eventful professional hockey career," said Burke.
"In retirement, I will certainly miss the camaraderie with my teammates and the interaction with the fans most of all." Burke was selected 24th overall in the 1985 Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. He has played for nine teams over his NHL career (Devils, Whalers, Flyers, Hurricanes, Canucks, Panthers, Coyotes, Lightning and Kings).

"I am looking forward to the beginning of this new phase of my life," said Burke. "It will be nice to have more time to watch and encourage my children as they pursue their own sporting endeavours."
An impressive sight on the ice due to his size, Burke used his stature and steady play to establish himself as a formidable NHL goaltender.
The three time NHL all-star played in 820 NHL games putting together a 324-341-110 record with a 2.96 GAA and a .902 save percentage. His 38 career shutouts rank him 6th on the NHL's all-time list.
His final season was spent with the Kings where he played in 23 games and posted 3.11 GAA.
Burke crafted a storied international career in addition to his time in the NHL. He backstopped Team Canada to a silver medal in the 1986 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship as well as winning an Olympic Silver medal in 1992.
He played in five IIHF World Hockey Championships. His best tournament was in 2003 when he led Canada to the Gold and led the competition with a 1.28 GAA. Burke also won a Gold medal in 1997.
