Default Gary Matthews Jr Steroid Allegations

A 2/27 Yahoo Sports report references an Albany Times-Union story on a New York State Grand Jury investigation that links Gary Matthews Jr., boxing champion Evander Holyfield, and the Pittsburgh Steelers organization to the purchase of performance-enhancing drugs through the same Mobile, Alabama pharmacy used by Jose Canseco.

Anybody heard about this?

What about this gem?

This morning Gary Matthews Jr. addressed the media about his name being linked to an online performance-enhancing drug company.
His statement, as follows:
"I just want to tell you guys that I'm not really in a position to answer any specific questions on yesterday's story. I do want to say that I do expect it to resolve itself here in the near future, pretty soon. I've got my representative looking for more information on it and to find out stuff and until we find out more stuff, I just can't comment on it. I ask that you guys respect my position on it. I don't want to be a distraction to my team and there's things that they're trying to do on the field to be ready for the coming season. I do want to tell you guys that at the appropriate time I will address the matter."

I guess he wants to construct his alibi/lie after he sees the evidence. Why admit the truth if you and your lawyer can massage the facts? I wonder if his contract contains a moral/ethics/perjury/criminal charges clause?

If he gets suspended and can't play I would say the contract could get voided. There should be something like that in the contract when he signed it.

According to law enforcement documents we've reviewed, Matthews is not just on a customer list, as was reported Tuesday. In August 2004, he was allegedly sent Genotropin -- a brand of synthetic human growth hormone typically prescribed to children suffering from growth failure -- at an address in Mansfield, Texas. We traced the address and it is the residence of a former minor league teammate of Matthews', who told us that he is friends with Matthews.

Definitely a contentious issue. I just don't see the Angels using it as a way to get out of his contract. What's more likely is that GMJ will play out his contract with a cloud over his head and a lot of cash in his pocket.

I thought one of those articles said that MLB wasn't testing for whatever it is Matthews is alleged to have taken. If that is the case, I hope he has a back-up connection - most druggies do. All I care about is his on-field performance anyway. The size of his head is of no concern to me if he plays like he did last year for Texas and saves me from having to watch Figgins make spectacular catches out of routine fly balls.
