Default Shea Hillenbrand signs with Angels

Per ESPN, it's a one-year contract with an option for 2008.

Quote:
The 31-year-old Hillenbrand, dividing his time between leagues, hit a combined .277, with a career-high 21 home runs and 68 RBI in 141 games. He finished with 73 runs and 27 doubles.

He batted .301 and hit 12 homers for the Blue Jays before being designated for assignment July 19. He was traded to the Giants on July 21 for pitchers Vinnie Chulk and Jeremy Accardo, and hit .248 with nine homers in 60 games with San Francisco.

It's a one-year deal, so I don't see how it pushes anyone out. Kotch has to show that he's back completely from his illness and Figgins belongs as a super-sub to begin with.

The Angels may be pulling out of the Helton negotiations because of this deal. This guy put up a total VORP of 5.1 last season! 5.1! And he's mostly a DH! He had an OPS+ of 93! If you look at last year's stats it easily makes him one of the worse signings of an already bad off-season, but at least it's only a one year commitment.
Not sure how this works out though because they're essentially taking at-bats away from some good young players like Quinlan and Kotchman and giving them to Hillenbrand. And of course, the clubhouse chemistry will be so much better now...

It may be a one-year deal but the roster is over the limit. Somebody has to go..probably for prospects. There is NO room. Makes no difference if it is a one-year or a 3-month deal...still have to make room.

All they need to do is move Rivera to the 60 man DL spot... Plus there are some stiffs in AAA they can bump off the 40 man if needed.

I'm talking about the 25_man roster...not the 40-man

The Angels designated Chris Bootcheck for assignment today to make room for Shea Hillenbrand.
