Default Pitching and the DL

Although the Royals still lack depth, they will have some decisions to make in the next 30 days. When Hudson comes back in about two weeks, Standridge will probably go down. Hudson will probably replace Braun in about 3 weeks. Elarton now expects to come back about the middle of May. Who goes at that point?

Default They all can go...

All the guys you mentioned are AAA guys at best... if ALL of them were in OMAHA they wouldn't win the title... It just doesn't matter at this point to have that discussion.... Whenever they all leave is the right move to make.

1. Gil Meche (1-0, 1.23) 7.1 ip vs. Red Sox. 6 hits, 1 BB, 1 hit batter and 6 strike outs. His next start is tomorrow vs. Tigers.

2. Odalis Perez (0-1, 6.75) 5.1 ip vs. Red Sox. 5 hits, 3 walks, 3 K's.

3. Zack Greinke (0-1, 1.29) 7 ip vs. Red Sox. 8 hits, 2 runs (1 earned). 1 BB and 7 K's. Very solid start to his comeback season.

4. Jorge De La Rosa (1-0, 1.29) 7 ip vs. Tigers. 4 hits, 3 BB and 5 K's. Impressive. Much better than what I was expecting. I was expecting pitch count troubles by the 5th inning, but he made his 103 pitches last 7 innings.

Brandon Duckworth is our #5 starter, although he will get skipped this first time through due to the off day on Tuesday. I'm betting that he'll stay on the team when Luke Hudson comes back. So, the least effective reliever will be sent out. I've never been that impressed with Wellemeyer. Too many walks, and not enough K's. His ERA in the 3's last year didn't mean much to me. I still don't like him (as a pitcher). I really hope it is a big deal issue when Elarton comes off the DL. For it to be a big issue, the other starters would have to be performing well. Assuming no injuries, here's the rotation I expect when we get all of our starters healthy:

1. Meche
2. Perez
3. Hudson
4. Elarton
5. Greinke

Bullpen
6. Soria
7. Gobble
8. Peralta
9. De La Rosa
10. Duckworth
11. Riske
12. Dotel

I also suppose that the Royals could switch to an 11 man staff at some point since it looks like they aren't trying to "hide" Soria in the pen. He pitched the 8th of a 3-1 game vs. the Tigers tonight.

Default Pitching

It wouldn't surprise me if they traded Elarton as soon as he is eligible to come off the DL. Although we lack depth he would be the most expendable. Perez hasn't pitched well yet, but he has been a slow starter in the past.
