I remember Dayton's first action as the GM of the Royals pretty well. I was on Vacation in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee around June 20. He traded JP Howell to Tampa for Gathright and an infielder that I can't remember his name (Cortez?).
Since then, instead of trading arms (like his opening act) Dayton has been acquiring them like crazy. He's been completely rebuilding the pitching within the system. Here's a list of pitchers that Dayton has brought into the fold: John Bale (LHP)-on 40 man roster. Free agent signing. Brian Bannister (RHP)- on 40 man roster. Trade with Mets for Burgos Jorge De La Rosa (LHP)- 40 man roster. Trade with Brewers for Graffanino Scott Dohman (RHP) - on 40 man roster. Trade with Rockies. Affeldt and Bautista traded to acquire Dohman and Shealy. Gil Meche (RHP)- 40 man roster. Free agent signing. Odalis Perez (LHP)- 40 man roster. Trade with Dogers for Elmer Dessens Ken Ray (RHP)- 40 man roster. minor league free agent signing. Joakim Soria (RHP)- 40 man roster. Rule 5 pick from SD. Tyler Lumsden (LHP)- AA last year. Acquired from the White Sox for MacDougal. Blake Johnson (RHP)-Acquired from Dodgers in Odalis trade. Julio Pimentel (RHP)-acquired from Dodgers in Odalis trade. Daniel Cortes (RHP)- low A last year. Acquired from White Sox for MacDougal with Lumsden. I may have missed someone, but that is 12 pitchers that Dayton has brought on board since June (not to mention the minor league free agents that he's signed fairly recently). |

It will take a few years to be able to tell whether Moore's Royals can draft and develop pitchers better than the previous regime, which in the end is likely to determine whether the Royals can return to sustained success.
In the meantime, it will be very interesting to assess how well Moore and his people can identify useful arms out of other organizations, the free agent pool, and the scrap heap. Maybe we should keep a running list (thread) of the major league arms that he acquires and discards, and how they perform afterwards, to see how he is doing. Certainly the arms he discarded in 2006 haven't exactly overachieve elsewhere so far. Affeldt, Bautista, Howell. Did Moore release Snyder, or was that Baird? |

If I remember correctly this happened right around the time Dayton was hired or being hired. Wasn't this right after Brandon Duckworth was signed? Perhaps this was done during the period of Baird being shown the door and Dayton officially becoming the Royals GM.
