Default Meche signs with Royals (was: close to)

Wow this would be pretty awesome. I know we will be over paying, but it's time KC steps up and does something. Get it done Dayton.

As my good friend Cironnu would say - In Dayton we trust!

Meche close to signing with Royals

I just checked in and read that. I was very surprised. I thought we were definitely out of that one. 4 years/$45 million. I'd say that is overpaying, but at least we get a pitcher with a 55-44 career record for about $11 milllion per year unlike Toronto last year that had to pay AJ $11 per for 5 years for his under .500 record. I guess that gives us:

1. Meche
2. Perez
3. Hudson
4. DLR
5. Bannister

Maybe we could use DLR out of the pen and Greinke could start. Anyway you slice it, that is a much better group than what we trotted out there last year. Plus, Elarton comes back in June.

Now that it looks like Meche has signed at $11 million per year, let the screaming begin.

It's fun listening to all the sour fans on this deal. "Royals overpaid!" "He followed the money."

Almost every team has been overpaying free agents year after year while we sit on our thumbs. The Royals finally outbid a few clubs for a 28 year old with a lot of potential. Whatever go talk about how the Cubs are overpaying anyone that breaths!

I'd also like to add that the Royals WASTED way more money last year on useless players then we are paying both Meche and Dotes. (IE: Redman, Elarton, Sanders, Dougie M)

Also here is a fun quote in the Toronto Star by Blue Jays GM, J.P. Ricciardi.

Quote:
“No knock against the kid, but we might’ve dodged a bullet there,” said Jays’ general manager J.P. Ricciardi, who headed home from the winter meetings this morning after striking out on both of the team’s major — if not only — free-agent targets.

“When you’re talking to a guy about coming to a place that’s very close to winning and he’s telling you how important it is to him — and then he chooses a place like that .... that might’ve been an eye-opener for us. We’re trying to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox, so we need guys who want to compete against those guys.”

"And then he chooses a place like that"
What a class act.

Between Meche and Dotel, it shows that the Royals are serious about building around pitching much like the Braves. If Greinke can recover and Hochevar turns out to be something, that seems like a possibility.

It also makes some sense, upon reflection, for the Royals to be signing FA pitching because the current team and farm system looks much, much better when it comes to position players.

Kevin,

That is what probably has us Royals fans the most excited. Every since Dayton took the job he has been stock piling arms. We have to believe a few of them are going to come out of the bunch to be pretty good. It's been a long time since we have seen some pretty good pitching here in KC.
