Brazelton isn't the pitcher I was hoping we go after, but it's a solid move for a minor league contract.

When I was looking at the list of free agents I saw Dewon there and was intrigued enough to look up his stats. I knew he was a former first rounder (albeit a signability pick) of the D'Rays. I looked at the numbers and remembered his problems of not reporting to AAA when asked to by the team. I think it will end up being a who cares kind of pick, though. He'll be AAA fodder like Ed Yarnall was in '06.
I do think it would be a good thing to sign Dotel, and the fact that we can offer him the closers job and not a set up role bodes well for us. However, we do need at least one (of course two would be better) pitcher that is better than anyone we currently have. We are rumored to be in pursuit of Meche and maybe Batista. Meche won't come here. I just don't see a way it would happen. He's one of the most sought after free agent pitchers. Those just don't volunteer to come to a team that has lost 100 games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. I think Batista is the better bet. It would be a shorter term deal for less money and less years. I think the production would be about the same. |
