Its called the Soriano Efffect. With Soriano getting what he got from Chicago, other players think they can get that much too. 100 mill for Lee i think is WAY too much money. Even Soriano got WAY too much money. But welcome to the market nowadays.

I guess the Brewers trading him to Texas was a good trade because we actually got something for him. Brewers would never have been able to offer him that much. 12 million I think we could handle but not almost 17 million per.
I would rather have Lee than Soriano though. Agressive move by the Astros but I think it will pay off. |

I had heard rumors that Houston had made this exact offer on the last day of the GM meetings with a deadline of this weekend. The Astros needed another slugger in the middle of the lineup. Berkman put up great numbers on the worst offensive team in baseball. This should give him some protection and allow the Astros to move Ensberg to 2nd in the batting order, where he can use his high OBP to help set the table.
At the same time, Houston also signed Woody Williams who should eat lots of innings for the Astros. The Astros have a good pen, but they need another starter besides Oswalt who can get go at least 7 and save the pen. Williams should be that guy. |

I know the Astros were in desperate need of offensive help but they overpaid him. This years free agent market has been ridiculous. Huge contracts are going out to players that would not have gotten nearly that much in years past. This may have been the cheapest that the 'Stros could have gotten a power bat for but I get the feeling that the contract may come back to haunt in a few years.

Lee has been a pretty good player up to this point. People talk about his defense and his weight. The weight concerns me a little, but for the price he is being paid, both he and the team have a lot of reasons to make sure he stays at a comfortable playing weight. The money should not be a problem. The Astros will likely have a lower payroll this year than last. Money is always a concern, but it's not a back breaker.
