Astros sign Wunsch & Weber

Astros signed LHP Kelly Wunsch to a minor league contract.

Wunsch, who was born in Houston, must have really wanted to pitch close to home to take a deal without an invitation to spring training. If healthy, he'd be a better option for the Houston pen than Scott Sauerbeck, who just signed a minor league deal with a spring training invite. However, he hasn't been injury free since the first half of 2005.

Astros signed RHP Ben Weber to a minor league contract.

Weber, 37, had his last effective season with the Angels in 2003. He finished with ERAs right around 8.00 in limited action the following two years and posted a 4.33 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse last season. The Astros aren't giving him an invitation to major league camp.

Wunsch is injured and won't be able to pitch at any level until mid season. Weber will get a chance to land a role as a lefty specialist. The reality is that Wunsch, Weber and Saurbeck are organizational depth in case of injury.

Of all the ST invities on Minor League contracts, Hidalgo and Moehler have the best chance to make the team. Even then they really have to over acheive in ST.
