This trade has been in the works for about 2 weeks. The actual trade is Jason Jennings and Miguel Astacio for Willy Tevares, Json Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz.
I consider Astacio and Buchholz a wash. Buchholz may have a little more upside, but probably not a lot. That menas the Astros are trading their light hitting/great fielding center fielder and top pitching prospect for 1 years service for Jennings who was very good last year, but has been mediocre in years past. The Astros had depth, but little experience at the end of the rotation. Chris Burke will move to centerfield where Jason Lane will be his primary backup. Hunter Pence will start the year in AAA adn can be called up if these 2 guys struggle. Josh Anderson is also a possiblity in center but realistically not before 2008. The battle for the final 2 rotation spots will be between Wandy Rodriguez Chris Samson Fernando Nieve Ezekial Astacio Miguel Astacio Matt Albers Troy Patton I think the Astros would like to start the year with Patton and Albers in AAA. Nieve was slated for the bullpen, but with both Hirsh and Buchholz gone, I think he will get a chance in ST to start. Sampson and Rodriguez are probably the current frontrunners, but that could change. |

I agree with your assesment. But I think the Astros will be starting Hunter Pence in CF and Patton in the rotation on the end of the year. I think Rodriguez and Nieve will win the #4 and $5 spots in the rotation. But with Willy T gone, will Craig Biggio be the leadoff hitter or Chris Burke? This would be my lineup if I was Phil Garner.
1. Chris Burke, CF 2. Mike Lamb, 3B 3. Lance Berkman, 1B 4. Carlos Lee, LF 5. Luke Scott, RF 6. Craig Biggio, 2B 7. Adam Everett, SS 8. Brad Ausmus, C 9. Pitcher

Correctin, the name is Miguel Assencio, not Astacio.
I doubt that Lamb will be the starter in Houston. He is to great a liability on defense. Unless a trade is made, Ensberg is the starter. If a trade is made, expect Houston to resign Huff. |
