Defenseman Richard Matvichuk says he's almost ready to make his season debut from summertime disc surgery. But before he does, Lou Lamoriello will have to clear another $1.3 million in full-season salary to stay under the cap.

The trouble with the salary cap, however, is that in order to play him in an NHL game, the Devils have to make their move before he plays. There is no grace period, aside from a minor-league conditioning stint, and if he comes off Long Term Injury status, the Devils would have to live with any rust.
