I think Bobby Orr was a better overall player (nearly the same amount of PIMs, but 3x the number of points, etc).

EDDIE SHORE
550 GP, 105 G, 179 A, 284 PTS, 1047 PIMs

BOBBY ORR
657 GP, 270 G, 645 A, 915 PTS, 953 PIMs, +597

Agreed. But really, can a thread titled "The greatest" exist without even mentioning Gretzky? Doesn't he still hold 60+ records?

While I never saw Shore play I have spoken to a few who played both with and against him as well as to many guys who played under his orders in Springfield.

Shore changed the game, there's no doubbt in my mind or the minds of the men I've spoken to. As a player he made defencemen into scoring threats. He wasn't the first, but let's face it neither was Orr. Each had their own eras on the ice and were the best in the business when they were at their peaks. It is fair to say that both controlled the play when they were on the ice.

While Orr's contributions to the game essentially stopped with his retirement, Shore was one of the game's movers and shakers for 35 years after he hung up his blades. He's often the subject of ridicule for some of his more outlandish training drills but if you go to the local rink this evening, you'll see all kinds of kids out there in practice. A lot of the drills they're doing were devised by Eddie Shore and used with his players a half-century ago.

When the Soviets came to North America looking for ways to bring their game up to the point they felt safe to challenge the NHL, they went to Springfield and spent considerable time in the rink taking notes.

When you talk about personality there's no comparison. I'm not sure Bobby Orr has one. He's a great player, a legend and a fine human being but, let's face it, a little on the dull side compared to the Old Man, one of the greatest personalities the game has ever seen.

Shore was a great player, but Orr was, by far, the greatest defenseman to lace em up...ever...period! Two Art Ross Trophies. C'mon, when is the next time a defenseman will win the Art Ross....probably never.

You could make an argument that the three best defenseman of all time were Boston Bruins, Orr, Bourque and Shore.

Mike Bossy? He was one of the greatest pure goal scorers, if not the best! Is he the guy you are talking about?
