The two that came to mind to inspire this thread are Bill Pullman and Ben Foster. I watched Alpha Dog and Foster was intense, I first saw him in The Punisher and he was really good in that as well. Guy Pearce and Jim Caviezel are also a couple guys that stand out.

Kathy Bates. Most flexible actress in Hollywood, although her star has dimmed in recent years. I always get flack from my actor friends for rating that quality so highly, but I am unapologetic. Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman have made careers out of playing....Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman. Their characters are inevitably just reflections of the actors with not much digression. That isn't to say those characters aren't great, just that I value them a little less.

I don't know that Blythe Danner could be regarded as underrated, but she certainly has been underused throughout her career. No one ever seemed to cast her in a star making vehicle when she was young, now she is typed as a mom/grandma in supporting roles.
Then there is Illeana Douglas who isn't glamourous looking enough for Hollywood but is an extraordinarily gifted performer. I've never seen a bad performance from Kevin Pollak and I agree with the folks who have already mentioned David Strathairn. I'm a Steve Buscemi fan, but I think he has achieved a cult status which precludes classification as underrated, he's rated. |

I really enjoyed Roth in the pretty much forgotten "sleeper" 'The Legend of 1900," in which he plays a gifted piano player who spend his entire life on an ocean-going liner. Strange but very good flick. |

Tim Roth is a stud, he was phenomenal in in Reservoir Dogs, good call. Mary Stuart Masterson is another that comes to mind, loved her in Some Kind Of Wonderful but it was her role in Benny And Joon that really made me take notice of how good she really is ![]() |
