I think Crosby, Thornton, Jagr, Lidstrom, Pronger, and Brodeur are safe picks to have in your fantasy league...
I can't think of anyone that is currently as dominant to hockey as the players you mentioned for other sports. Ovechkin & Malkin are pretty awesome, too! |

It really does seem to vary. I was involved in two fantasy drafts, Thornton went first in one, Ovechkin in the other.
So no, there's no Tomlinson or Pujols type player, though I can see Crosby and Ovechkin approaching that status before too long. |

These days practically anyone from the Buffalo Sabres is a fantasy hockey stud. Vanek didn't even get drafted in my money league and he's been a beast. A buddy of mine in that league picked him up off the scrap heap and has been reaping the benefits ever since. Lucky son of a.....
Milan Michalek didn't get drafted either, thankfully I was the one who snatched him up. |

From a statistical standpoint, not having a stud like LT or Pujols really evens the playing field. A lot of studies have been made in this, and they all concluded that if you have a first pick overall in like a Marshall Faulk year (LT this year), you have a huge advantage over all other teams.
I gave fantasy hockey a shot once. My first pick (which was the 4th overall) was Milan Hedjuk. He was a bust that year (two years ago I think). That's when I gave up on Fantasy Hockey. |
