Well.. this weekend, the draft happened for my long-time keeper league... league has been going since 1992...
16 team league 6X6 scoring Offensive categories - BA, HR, RBI, R, SB, OPS Pitching Categories - W, L, K, ERA, WHIP, SV 22 player slots, 16 starting positions C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UTIL SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P 3 Keepers per year My 3 Keepers: 3B Miguel Cabrera SP Chris Carpenter SP Roy Oswalt Not going to list the specific pick numbers, as draft pick trading is pretty common place... for example I had 2 picks in the 1st round (including the 1st pick), 1 in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, etc... so I will just list in the order in which I got them Draft Selections, in order: 1) C Joe Mauer 2) SP Ben Sheets 3) 2B Dan Uggla 4) 1B Prince Fielder 5) OF Delmon Young 6) RP Chris Ray 7) RP Brad Lidge 8) OF Nick Markakis 9) SP Rich Harden 10) UTIL Jim Thome 11) 1B/OF Mike Cuddyer 12) OF Brad Hawpe 13) RP Joel Zumaya 14) OF Brian Giles 15) SP Dave Bush 16) SS Troy Tulowitzki 17) 3B Edwin Encarnacion 18) RP Salomon Torres 19) SS Khalil Greene Already have a trade offered to me, because LORD knows I am weak at SS, and that is: SS Troy Tulowitzki and RP Chris Ray for 2B/SS/3B Julio Lugo and RP Takashi Saito This would not completely sure up my SS problem, but it gives me a little more proven entity, and I think the RP trade is about a wash. SS is a huge problem, but I knew it would be with the top 6 SS's kept from last year. The SP rotation is a major strength on this team. Harden and Sheets are huge targets in all of my 4 total leagues this year. The OF again is weak, but not as weak as what it would be in a 12 team league. The addition of Thome in the double digit rounds was a huge boost. Since he was not listed on the 1B list, people were overlooking him. The lack of SB's will hurt, until I can trade for some, but the plethora of high OPS potential hitters is nice... run production (RBI and R) should not be a problem

Thome fell a long way in one of my Leagues, too. I think you are right about him not being on the list of 1B-men (and not being super high on the total listing, a la David Ortiz). It was a good pick.
I have to keep reminding myself that this is a 16-team League, which helps assuage some concern about the OF. There is some good potential there, and it lacks only an anchor -- those sometimes arise from the potentials. Hell, I say stick Fielder or Thome there and let Cuddyer roam the OF. That should do the trick for you in terms of depth. I am concerned about 2B, though, and mostly because I remain unconvinced about Dan Uggla. Do you have any positional flexibility that would let you replace him, if needed? Lugo would help, but I'm just skittish about that trade in general. I have succeeded and failed with Lugo in the past, so I am hopeful and apprehensive at the same time. One question -- are there a lot of RP keepers in this League, or did they perhaps start going early? I ask only because it looks like you started with RP's fairly soon (not a big deal), then kept taking them ahead of other spots (which is unusual). |

The was only 1 RP kept, that being Rivera.... as stated, there were 6 SS kept, 3 3B, 1 C, 6 1B, 4 2B, 11 SP, 16 OF
The RP run started in round 5 with K-Rod, quickly followed by about 6 in 8 picks... I got Ray at the end of the mini-run that happened in round 7, and took Lidge in round 8 (going thru my draft notes here that are strewn all over my home computer desk)... with 16 teams, you need to ensure you get 2 closers before some others start grabbing their third. With this league removing Holds as a stat category (by vote last season, along with offensive K's, and reducing 1 spot in the starting lineup and 2 reserve roster spots) counterbalancing with setup pitchers was no longer an option Cuddyer was drafted by me specifically for the OF, so that is already in the mix.... he is slotted to bat 3rd in the MIN lineup between Mauer and Morneau, from what I am hearing, and I like him in that position..... Lugo is a concern, as I can see getting burned by him... but I am also looking to trade around a bit more for another viable SS such as Renteria or Felipe Lopez... but I could not start the season with Tulo as my starting SS, no matter if I think he has potential or not, for I do not trust a 21 year old SS prospect who really is not praised as much. Delmon Young is one thing being a starter for me, Tulo is quite another.... BTW, I have accepted the trade and the e-mail has been sent out to the league members for voting... 3 days to find out) I really have no flexibility at 2B at this point, unless I do trade for another SS... He was about the top 2B on the board from the start of the draft... him and Weeks were options, but I am about as unconvinced about Weeks as you probably are about Uggla

The Team looks good.
Don't worry about Uggla. He will do good. Don't worry about the Outfield. For a 16 team Keeper league where most of the good outfielders are gone before you start drafting that is pritty dam good to end up with what you got. I agree you may be a little weak at shortstop and I would sugget accepting that trade. Yeah, There is a chance that Tulowitzki may breakout and you could come out on the short end but that isn't a sure bet and Lugo is more proven and at worse if you can't fip him he will atless give you a few more stolen bases. |

The trade passed... Tulo and Ray gone... Lugo and Saito on the roster... Lugo is the starting SS and Saito replaces Ray in a RP slot
